Re: C&S Brass, Any Scale, Listed on eBay - Sn3 OMI caboose

Keith Hayes
I think this is Jeff Osborn's model. He has had a number of interesting pieces pass through his hands, including an open D&RGW observation car imported by PBL that I never recall seeing advertised.

Also, a bunch of Sn3 equipment hit Brass Trains this week. A CONX 8 is on there, along with several wide frame CONX cars. These things are like bitcoin, so you would be wise to pick these up at any price. There are also an unusual number of flangers, MOW cars and even a C&S 22 was there for a while.

There is currently listed an Overland Sn3 brass C&S caboose 1006: https://www.ebay.com/itm/356043761231

Two days left on auction, current bid $135.00. these little guys rarely show up for sale . . .

There has been a plethora of goodies appearing on Brass Trains of late. The following items are still available as of 9/29/24:

-Overland #9, unpainted
-Overland #70, unpainted
-Overland RGS #74, unpainted
-PBL #76, painted. Box says DCC, description says DC
-PBL #345 (honorary C&S lokie!)

A couple Overland passenger cars passed across the page, as did a waycar.

Also unusual are a number of tank cars (our version of Bitcoin!), a strangely large number of geese and MOW models, a RGS #22, and an Overland WP&Y Rotary #1 (painted): SHUT THE FRONT DOOR!

This seems to be the week of C&S brass from Overland to show up on eBay:

OMI Sn3 C&S  5, early c1910 version, will need to be striped of private road paint (but that's why God created lacquer thinner):
https://www.ebay.com/itm/226423654282?_skw=overland+brass+Sn3+C%26S&itmmeta=01JBR229Y7EC1SK5V20EZ2M1ZX&hash=item34b7e6c78a:g:WAQAAOSwQRBnIVsA&itmprp=enc%3AAQAJAAAA8HoV3kP08IDx%2BKZ9MfhVJKkfhcZNGfr6%2BwY90qVsDFdMXBGNpTDCdpE46A3xW1sJzEk%2BeXMT%2FXLZB94CwIRFZ9GJS8UxMkoDZ9HiELeopq5l5%2BTPZa4%2Fi6Eugzh2gXiO8QrD%2B0oJ5sN4evE%2FnYJH18znT3ZbBe95GeeZ%2BwGoBTocWDuUfABve9A1NnX%2F%2BgcqE%2B%2BfJ8u5G8RxCJfdZBWJmbTxXg7DkwOMA8V0%2BPHKlA2XQpCt28Qdj7TUt193IVma1uQajwbVcyRqhEQrWDw1mIZfFY2OxOcYWw0Sj8j%2FUReCaRMYuSnV2LODeoAGGZZmUg%3D%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR5qfiYLeZA

OMI Sn3 C&S 22, second run with Ridgeway stack and intermediate tender, painted:  https://www.ebay.com/itm/286048752173?_skw=overland+brass+Sn3+C%26S&itmmeta=01JBR229Y8XWWJ4ZSCK20YKQGF&hash=item4299d5922d:g:NqsAAOSwXQZm20Fc&itmprp=enc%3AAQAJAAAA8HoV3kP08IDx%2BKZ9MfhVJKmj2HQ3rizMgZvG1AYAb3zuleQA%2Flv4jR%2BqM2w76sXUXST2deb99BCcGDN0FZpGCAkeeL4XRcPG4iIDE65IUPhn3EKT55QhLriF1zyr09%2F4tIVxHaWBjbftL%2B2Umbp4kRRx2JNHfDvaynaQv%2Ficdjra8FyyDcMyf6Arn83qPPcrGvn9s%2B0qPqlKoKoj%2FebK1iGW6xER94tam6LtDPJhHd8z2UjwCL98oU%2BaOfDQezi2KZhdxle8D8KU8Ly%2B90lCmOP--m8zzxuMIOW5Xv1QK7RiN26IgK8Wmuf8R7YDD2WUoA%3D%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR5yfiYLeZA

After more than 10 years of waiting I'm able to replicate the last train from Alma from our entry page.
Thank you all for your support, hints and good advice. Now I have to paint and letter No 8 and change the plow.

Would anyone know what number the caboose was?
I wish you all great Thanksgiving!

I‘ve come across a C&S No 60 kit. I‘ve never seen a kit like that before. Does anyone know how many were produced?

Hi, Christian. I'm not sure how many of the #60 "kits" were produced by Precision Scale. But I think it was 25. I think the number of "finished" units of #60 was 100, but I'm not sure about that, either. The reason the kits were offered was as non finished models, the import duty was less per unit. But the cost savings could not have really made it worthwhile. The running gear and frame assembly with motor is completed, which helps a lot. The tender frame and tank are completed, and the basic boiler and cab are assembled. But all of the detail parts and plumbing are just loose parts.

As is the case with most C&S locomotives, #60 is unique in numerous ways. It is a Rhode Island locomotive with a small Wagon Top boiler and an undersized tender tank possibly from #6 on a long frame. The smokebox front is one of a kind. It is a class B-4-C, and smaller than the Baldwin B-4-D class like #70.

I build one of the #60 kits as #61 in about 1983. I accepted the #60 style smokebox front and the undersized tender tank, and it turned out pretty well, I thought. I made a few changes, including the headlight and steam dome and it was OK, just enough different than #60.

If you'd like a challenge, go for it!!

I saw one at an early narrow gauge convention (probably 1984 or 1986)that had been at the PSCo shop during their fire and had some fire damage. Some of the pre-formed brass wire was melted, and the varnish on the boiler assembly had been burned. It all seemed to be in good condition otherwise, with castings generally not impacted, and while the boiler obviously got hot, it doesn't seem to have been hot enough to be annealed. The price was good and I was very temped to buy it, but I was either still in school or just out so it was a bit of a stretch for me. By the time I decided to make an offer, someone else bought it. A few years later - probably early 1990s - I saw it again at another convention. The seller there was the buyer a the previous convention, and I'm pretty sure his asking price wasn't any more than what he paid for it. My resources were a bit better by then, so I picked it up. My intention was to back-date it to how it looked when it arrived from the U&N, maybe even lettering at Utah & Northern. I still have plans to do that, but admit that I may never get up to it. I have several similar projects on the shelf, and am not doing much model building lately.

Here's what my kit looks like:

And what I plan to make it look like:

Hi, Todd. The fire or damage caused by it may have caused someone to disassemble the running gear and motor from the frame. I've never seen one of these without a completed frame assembly. I hope you have all the springs and other parts!
