Skip,

many thanks for putting up the loco-tender brake diagram, it's just what I needed!  Now I understand how it all works, I just need to make a decision about exactly how to locate the two lines down through the deck and underneath.  

I think I will put on a retainer valve line.  Jim points out that there were examples of tenders without them possibly up to 1910 or so, but a review of photos convinces me that most all had them by my late-teens time frame.  Now I can get back to work.

Here's a close-up from that photo. Still not enough to completely decipher, but it helps.

Then try looking in Klinger's Gunnison :)  You will find it there.
