Re: Phase I Coal Cars ~ Side Chain Roller Question

Keith Hayes
And now a 3d print!

The AP jury did not consider the Phase I coals using the BLW/PVC underframe to be "scratch built."

So I fired up SketchUp and created a 3d print of the frame!

This is rather a bus man's holiday for me, and does not seem much like modeling,  but

I am liking this tan plastic. There is very little texture and all the 1" diameter (S scale) holes appear to have rendered. Since I was at it, I figured I would locate all the holes for stakes, grab irons and other safety ephemera.

So stand by as I make one more Phase I coal!

The underframe jewelry is complete. Now on to pre painting and the wood deck.

This post was updated on .
The deck and side boards have been stained a while now. Today the floor boards were cut to length and shiplapped.

It seemed more of a job than on the flat car. I guess time makes projects easier than they were in the moment.

The deck is on now, and will get a coat of Vitero stain to bring everything together.

Major hurdle achieved: all the grabs and NBWs and stirrups are installed. Paint is not far off!

Keith,

I can’t wait to see it painted and lettered. Very delicate clean work.

Paint exposes all the issues.

Some light sanding should address the glue issues. This is Vallejo acrylics, Brown and Rust mixed 50:50 and thinned 2:1. The final coat has a couple drops of white.
