Re: Love that #70

Alamosa.

Gotta love that corbeled brickwork in the background!

We really need to shift many of these posts to a new topic like 'oil' or 'tank cars.'

I for one thought that the image of the one car above in the RROBB book was a shipment of reinforced concrete pipe! Looks like a job for a 3d printer to me (Mike, you out there?).

Wow. Sheesh. Sorry, I can't make out any of that lettering, but it's been a pretty busy week and I'm pretty tired.

It doesn't look to me as though that is a narrow gauge stock car, as it has steel braces. The mountain behind the brick buildings is near and high. If this was on the C&S, Golden maybe? There's no way that's Alamosa unless I'm misreading what appears to me a large mountain backdrop. Salida could be a possibility if it's not C&S. Durango too, as they had dual guage for a while. But those buildings are new to me.

Doug, do you know? I'm buffaloed.

I'll take a stance on Salida, 3rail and heavy brick buildings   and this building...

Huerfano is the givaway. That is a county on the southern border, which leads me to suspect Alamosa. I did not see the mountain in the cropped shot. What about Florence? There is oil there, and perhaps a Continental Oil Refinery?

We need some City Directories!

But.... The Royal Gorge trackage Pueblo to Cleora, just East of Salida was standard gauged 1911.  No n.g. trackage on the Eastside left. F&CC was out of action by 1914.

How do you know the 70 isn't pushing the train?

(And isn't that a black roof on that caboose? )

Re: Love me tender (With apologies to Elvis) …

I'm not saying I know any more than anyone else. This appears to be a wb train. You can see the fireman's arm and it looks like he is facing backwards to me. You can't see the engineer perhaps because he is also looking backwards (over the tender?). Empty coals would likely be going up hill to IS (and the rapids in the creek indicate the creek flowing away from the camera - more or less). Why is the engine backing up the hill? Perhaps - and again just my amateur speculation - the position of the engine in front of a loaded train going down hill is more effective (and "safe"). Lots of braking on a leading tender might be undesirable? How 'bout it Chris and Rick?

OK Derrell,
Running a narrow gauge Diesel backwards at 60mph, that's way different on tracking to a 2-8-0 at 8-10mph. A tender should track no different to a freightcar in reverse, it's the lack of a trailing truck that is the issue, but given the very low speeds involved, no different to working a 2-8-0 in the yards all the time I think.
My old Depot in steam days did have a 4-8-0 assigned to the mainline shunt and that would have run 25miles out and back without turning very similar to Golden-Idaho distance.
We are all presuming here that the Fork's wye leg is still in existance at the time of the photo, maybe there was a fullhouse there preventing the 70 from turning?.
To me, that creek level is summer probably, pictures taken in mid-41 show them running with a long train out of Denver in the conventional manner.  Maybe this was all they had beyond Golden this particular day?  Wasn't a Wye leg installed at the Brickyard spur after the TT was removed, so the crew opted to turn at Golden, and ran backwards all the way to Idaho as they were probably accustomed to running in reverse for longer distances?  Old Enginedriver's are a cranky bunch and can get set in their ways!

The #60 is shown in Min Belt 3 at Elk Cr Tank being pushed upgrade as well.  Other pictures in CRRA-10 show similar moves (almost the same consist) at Floyd Hill.

I'm of the opinion that it is the electrical connection for the Backup light, what else could it be?  Seems to be a proper conduit from the rear light to the area of the Retainer valve then the hillbilly connections.
I don't see it being for tankheat, that was by steam.
