Re: Leadville Depot

Keith Hayes
Some new goodies came in the mail today from Shape ways.

I need to get the parts to my bench to evaluate them. I am very pleased with the rendering of the sunburst and the corbel.

The water tower base should arrive next week.

(Doug, where are the ore cars in that mess of a load? Is that like a mine-in-a-box?)

I got some primer on the dormers over the weekend.

The sunbursts are funky, but overall they turned out great. Shingles are on order from Builders in Scale.

As Doug hasn't replied......,

Keith, above the "Colorado &" lettering
think of that load as a Hoisthouse kitset on flat, only thing missing is a Boiler.

Which may have been this consignment to the Bertha Gold Mining & Milling Co.  http://c-sng-discussion-forum.41377.n7.nabble.com/Thoughts-on-Roper-s-Snapshot-Saturday-No-30-tp2459.html

and led me to wondering if the Hoist or winding engine was to be run on Compressed Air at a crosscut in the Newhouse/Argo Tunnel?  The presence of the Orecar(s) should support that notion if they were installing a Raise to a blind level or... perhaps that the Bertha is opening a whole new Shaft elsewhere.

Keith,

I think the parts look great! While they could have been scratch-built, the time savings alone, should make the 3-D printing costs worth it.

Re: The ore car on the flat...Chris nailed it. Kind of like a "Where's Waldo" picture.

I believe there were large quantities of Battleship grey and perhaps Olive Drab paint left after WWII.
Safety colors probably came along in the decade or two after the war...

Espee, when I modelled the sunbursts, I figured they were lapped like shingles. So, I divided the straight line into equal segments and drew lines from the center point to create the radiating lines.

Next, I drew a line down about an inch, and then drew a "sloping" line that forms the lapped edge of the shingle. Except in SketchUp, this is a 'warped' plane, so you need to draw a diagonal to create a surface (SketchUp is VERY picky about this).

If you look closely at the left sunburst on the large dormer, you can see where some "stitching" occurred.

A shed addition was added to the depot on the west side. This is shown in a Maxwell photo on pages 333 of Mineral Belt Volume I.

(Yes it hangs over the edge of the platform.)

One of the last items on the wall at Caboose at the end were some S scale shingles from Builders Inc Scale. These were there for a couple years. During my last visit I spied them, but determined to leave them for someone else. What was I thinking?!? I was in the middle of the dormer project.

So...I ordered some shingles from CC Crow and they showed up right away. These are a peel and stick product and are easy to cut and apply.

On down, three to go.

Thanks to Chris for posting a SW view of the addition. Of course this was after I had cut and assembled the wall parts. It does confirm my thesis that this is a vestibule/ air lock to keep the Leadville winter out.

Of course the door couldn't be a 5-panel door like Grandt's makes, so I had to fabricate a 4-panel door so Chris won't nit pick.

He he… yeah, that’s the trouble about these photos that turn up: they make it harder to cheat. ;)

Nit-Pick?  Haha I was a Contest Modeller,   and the Door is an improvement, I hope you noticed the short Gutter above the airlock?
Now if only I could get you to add the missing Stringers to your Indiana Gulch trestle.....

Spose the gutter is to route water around the hole in the roof made by the stove pipe?

Re: Leadville Depot

I'd hope that there would be a better flashing around the Stovepipe than that Keith but that gutter sure was strategically placed to as direct the overflow directly onto any unsuspecting person using the steps.

The Leadville Depot gets a roof

Keith Hayes
In reply to this post by Keith Hayes
I have been putting this fussy work off for a while. The Depot now has a roof, and the eave and brackets are now glued to the walls.

The idea is to install a fascia board around the perimeter of the upper roof, and this will slide over the lower roof and conceal the joint.

Now to finish fabricating the four dormers and order and apply a ton of shingles.
