Jim,

your #69 picture was taken at Fall River with the Scrap train.  Great view for me, note the Mill visible behind the Headlight.  This could be the Donaldson since the upper structure fits more with the Sanborn map.
 
Edit: Wrong conclusion. The Mill is the Hoosac and photo is taken at the outlet of Trail Creek looking up Clear Creek.  This same picture is on pg80 of Mal Ferrell's C&S NG; attributed to Laurie Brown and captioned as "switching at Black Hawk".

I find it a great pity that these photographers that covered the scrapping kept on taking mindless 3/4 roster shots of the same motive power time and time again.  I often think they should have just stepped to the side and added in that interesting Mine or Mill.

Now there's a real railroad modeling challenge: the motive power for McKee's speeder.  Maybe static grass for donkey fur??

  I have a photo of a work train along the Northern Pacific, replacing timbers
at a road crossing.  They have a sign just like this placed in the road to warn
motorists.  It read "MEN AT WORK".

Bear in mind that the photo is of the scrap train where all and sundry signs were picked up to adorn the pilots and tanks until there was no more track to pull.  Not an everyday occurrence and one that the Road Foreman would probably frown on the placement of such.  I was the fireman on the worktrain that pulled out the signals at Hukanui in the early 80's, the south end distant signal head came home with us on the rear cowcatcher.  Can be found alongside my Driveway today..

Chris: Thanks for pointing that out about the scrap train. I won't be putting signage on my locos. The pictures are kind of a bittersweet reminder of the end of an era. Nice to have pictures of equipment but sad to realize what was going on at that time.
