You can see what appears to be examples of both buildings in the background of the photo of the Garos wye in DSP&P Pictorial-Chapter IX(p299 in the original).Cliff Mestel of ClassicMiniatures/BK has/will have a model of the one-story in HO.

So, Chris, do you think this was a rolled roofing material, or a liquified rubber substance that was painted on with mineral grit added to the mixture (like later used on metal freight car roofs)??

The phrase "easy to lay" suggests a rolled material, but I cannot make out seams in the photo. For modeling purposes, would one use a single sheet of 400 grit black sandpaper or strips?

As you surmise,  Jim, I think the latter.

   Elaterite-

     Based on their own ad, I would say roll roofing. While trying to figure what the enginehouse may have been roofed with, Elaterite came up as a possibilty, if perhaps a replacement of earlier treatments.
