Never meant to slight you, Darel.
I figure you've just been taking a sabbatical from C&S layout building, meanwhile doing your part to help kids with cancer. Keep up both good works! Jim

DU (ha, I live near DU):
I toyed with the idea of some three rail track, if for no other reason that the -n3 of Sn3 confuses folks so much. In the end I have no other excuse than to say I was lazy. While planning the layout, I determined the most cost effective option for me was to hand-build turnouts and buy flex track. I accumulated the supplies and set off. Though I have some individual wood ties and a bit of rail, when I considered the idea of 3-rail track, I was thinking of just a short stretch near the depot for an outside braced boxcar or something like that. But then I realized that I did not have SG length ties. And, I was anxious to keep going. So my Leadville lacks SG and that is why the diamond is not 3-rail. Too bad Mac was not more on top of the diamond: I wonder what a 3-rail crossing looks like at the small square in the intersection? I tried building my own from scratch a couple times, got flustered and called in a professional, Steve Hatch. [Nonetheless, there were not that many diamonds on the NG. Some in Denver, one in Leadville, one in Idaho Springs. Where else? Any on the D&RG/ RGS or F&CC? Silverton lines? If you have an candidate, please start a new thread and post a picture or a map!]

Clipped from NSRM Facebook All crossings regardless of gauge and intersection angle comprise the same construction only increasing in amount of bracing sophistication as the Rail weight increased. Excerpted from the wonderful resource http://www.catskillarchive.com/rrextra/tkwk10.Html

I just read this thread. Now I'm jonesing to rebuild, no actually, I'm jonesing to try my hand at something beyond a 4x8 mentality of a layout.
I love the pics. Have you gotten any further? Oldbear in the Ozarks in Missouri, |
Here you go, Bear.
I got my wiring issue figured and am trying to run trains once a week to work out the bugs. But it takes away from modelling time and someone tells me I need more scenery (by which this person means mountains and trees) before the convention next year. Oh, and what is really neat is to hear the railroad squeal and clickity clack coming from the Sound Card unit in the caboose. Now if I could only my programming track figured out so I can adjust volume so one can hear everything better.

Wow. I love that photo. Thanks Keith. I am planning on building a couple car kits over the winter. Your 'rear end view' looks so good. Do you have any others you could share? I would like to get a view of some passenger stuff so we can get an idea of what shade of green to repaint our little fleet. ๐๐๐๐
Bear. |
Old Bear, just for you:
Darrell Poole painted these cars for me a couple years ago. According to Ken Martin, the cars are Pullman (olive) green. Brother D's cars have a black roof ala D&RGW cars, which I like, but Darrell insists the roofs were green too.

There was a caboose thread with a good discussion of roof colours:
http://c-sng-discussion-forum.41377.n7.nabble.com/Caboose-roof-color-td61i20.html But, I also give you this: Personally, I've only painted an out-of-service car-body so far, which I gave a black roof. I'm still undecided on my in-service cars.... Cheers, Jeff. |
Hey!! I well Lol
I meant the rear ended view of his train.... Oh lord....I am just....lol. No tail gunner here. Anyway, I am just really learning a lot from you guys. I am planning a trip our Como way to ride my fat-bike. Are there decent sections of road bed still out there to ride on? Btw a fat-bike is a mountain bike with rather wide tires. Mine are 5" wide. Be that a Left Hand Brewery sticker on the air duct? Glad to see our local brewer in Longmont, Colorado, being recognized.

Here's another dumb question:
Were all the cabeese on the C&S four wheel typesโI just want to know before I get one of those from Bachmann that uses trucks instead of bolsters. ๐. |
Other than a photo that generated lots of conversation, C&S cabeese were 4 wheel. Grandt makes a proper kit that is On3 but you can slide the wheels in to On30 if that is your desire. The Bachmann caboose is not C&S. Suggest that you check out the On30 Annual for several C&S related articles. You can see the Table of Contents on line to make some choices. You should also obtain the two volumes of Harry Brunk's C&S modeling articles that ran in the NG Gazette. While he was an HOn3 modeler the prototype info was very good. Bill:
I had a sneaky suspicion that the Bachmann ones weren't accurate. I have seen the Grandt line kits on eBay. Maybe one of those would be a good project for the winter. Oldbear aka Fred |
Grandt also offers 1/4" scale steel underframe kits used on box cars, reefers, etc. Bill Uffelman On Tuesday, December 6, 2016 6:15 PM, Oldbear52 [via C&Sng Discussion Forum] <[hidden email]> wrote:

OB,
Be sure to check out the Grandt Line products page as well. http://www.grandtline.com/products/mrr/mrr_home.html Several C&S kits, lots of styrene detail parts suitable for building in On30. Jim

A really awful cold has sidelined me for over a week. I was finally able to muster some energy and push the road bed south towards Fremont Pass.
Then I had time to extend the end of track some and run a train. Progress! Maybe more track next weekend?
