Re: Leadville Roundhouse

Right you are, Pat.

And what about the 4-board gondola behind low slung D&RG 9313?

It sits higher on it's trucks than 9313; is this one of the 1000-1250 gons built just after 1900?

If so that would move the photo forward into the first years of the 1900's.

I love it when you D&RG experts opine!

Looks like sugar beet loading from the wagon off an elevated ramp.

Now ...what size styrene did I use for the rafters? I would like to wrap up the roundhouse in 2018.

Jim

Sorry I missed your post this long.

Yes, the second car is a 1000 -1249 car.

From this and no automatic couplers, the date could be as late as 1904.

Based on finding D&RGW cars getting standard safety appliances as late was the early 20's, perhaps the date of the photo might be as late as 1905 or 6.

After laying off for a long time, I ordered the styrene and just installed the last rafter.

I guess the next thing to do is to cut the roof panels. I got a couple 'chicken coop' vents from Eric Bracher to stand in for some vents--the boys are putting the finishing touches on them. This building has a kitchen sinks worth of exhausts.

I have returned to the roundhouse project. First I had to paint the structure to match the doors and windows which were previously painted a dirty red-brown.

I never write my paint mixes down and had painted the doors and windows previously. When it came time to paint the building, I used my favorite brown,  which is really red. So out came the selection of true browns to take the edge off the red. Why not paint the doors instead? Smarty-pants me has already decaled the doors with stall numbers! All the doors were different,  and I didn't want to mix them up.

Next is adding the roof jewelry. I am assembling smoke jacks from Evergreen tub, sheet and brass wire.

Anyone notice that the main blog page has over 450,000 views?!? That means we have all spent a lot of time here sine 2012.

And...anyone hear from Chris in New Zealand of late? Goat got his tongue?

You might see some wheel sets in the background of the image above with realistic-looking bearings. These are now available at Poverty Flats on Shapeways.

Coming along nicely, Keith!

Looks like the boys still have some "jacking around" to do, on the roof top

A recent posting on FB labeled this as the interior of the Como roundhouse but I have a feeling that this could possibly be Leadville.

Corrugated iron for what appears as wainscot, close spaced Windows in stud framed wall.  Can't be Como then.

Re: Leadville Roundhouse

Seems pretty bright for either roundhouse. Leadville has 2 or 3 windows (quadruple hung) on the side walls and one window at the end of each of the six stalls. The windows in the pic look more like ten feet apart, not 15 or 20 feet.

Is there a car shop somewhere?

Rick, wasn't the original Leadville roundhouse 8 stalls? In the image is a article from the Fairplay Flume dated June 21, 1912.

Jeff,

Is that clipping referring to this fire?

If those stacks were still in use in 1912, much of what I think I know of that era's roster is suspect.

Nah, just a clumsy attempt at inserting "the" picture, so saving yet another thread.  Little brain amperage was used in the moment.

I'll do better next time, I promise.
