I remember reading about the missing headlight on 71. After the 1985 debacle with the locomotive (never mind that it ran, there were a lot of hard feelings and unkept promises) and display equipment, Nobody in Gilpin County (which was then the owner of 71 and the cars) knew what was going to happen to it.
It had been booted (as in ejected) from its "traditional" spot on the old right of way next to the Hawley Merchandise Warehouse and was placed on a piece of temporary track next to the Couer d'Alene mine.
The headlight was found in the home of a Gilpin County Historical Society "Volunteer' who absconded with it and kept it at his home for "Safe Keeping". After it was noticed to be missing and the town was in an uproar for over a month, the individual came forward with his story.
Such is the way in a lot of Mountain Towns.
Now if we can just get back the rest of the stuff that has been stolen, like the Marker Lamps from the front of the Locomotive, The Marker Lamps from the back of the combine and the fancy UPD&G door knob that was on the passenger end of the car. The rotary train order board that was mounted on the section house, the switch stand that was placed there. I guess that all of these items are "well preserved" in someone's basement, unless the preserver has died and the kids threw all of that old trash out.
In between the windows of combine 20 you can see the screw holes that held what looks to be candle lamps. The inner ceiling light fixtures are long gone.
