Thanks for posting a good close-up Derrell. I think much of this would have been clearer had Keith's original photo of his 74 been better.
In his photo it looked ok to me too. Not so now.
I stand corrected, Chris. Clearly they did have the wire handles. I shall look at earlier versions of the lamps and revise my thinking. By modern I mean post 1920 - generally (plus or minus) when final modernization began (although it never truly stopped, did it?).
It is very simple to miss the mark, Mike. All I ask is that we realize that the odds of being right as very slim, therefore we must trust each other to say, "I made a mistake". Otherwise what is the point of talking about any of this?
I can't say it was my pleasure, Darel. I really don't like countering anyone's thoughts here - except in fun of course. I feel that if I am going to speak at all it is important that those who read trust me to admit where I've been mistaken - that it is never intentional.
Personally it is painful to realize I've said something incorrect - but I must put honor of my word above my ego!
The model photos are as easily obtained as possible by simply typing PBL C&S 74 in your search browser. Boom! There is BrassTrains.com in all its glory.
You can find 75 and probably 76 as well. Handy source for a lot of models, BrassTrains.com; makes a model mechanics job somewhat tolerable.
Keith, an engine running in reverse at night had to have a white light on the tender (unless there was a permanent headlight) so it would make sense to have a hook there someplace.
