Classification Lights and Mounting Positions.

Chris Walker

http://digital.denverlibrary.org/cdm/singleitem/collection/p15330coll21/id/3660/rec/1

I was going to put this in Mikes #75 thread alongside Derrell's thoughts on mounting positions.....
This photo essay illustrates the complexity of the need to identify not only the Locomotive characteristics but also to define a particular era in service.  Lamp styles and shapes are also presented here along with the stack changes if possible to define the era.  One can also note that the Handrail was used often but not every time to act as a conduit for the wiring once the Lamps had been electrified, the wires exiting usually through an angle-Tee but sometimes a standard Tee pipe fitting.

Original Lamp Cages, empty in this case, Switcher service.

No Lamps in cages, nor Flags displayed, in Passenger service.

Redundant Smokebox side mounted Brackets still attached.  Standard Lamps electrified and mounted on a seperate standoff at the rear of the Headlight Brackets.

Above centre mounts on Smokebox Front-end.  Oil fired Lamps.

Close-up showing the "pig-tailing" of the wires, somewhat overdone in this case.

Not: #22 still has hoods over the Chimney even though converted to electric.

Note: Truncated Lamps yet the handles are still attached.

Redundant mid-side mounted bracket.  Note design incorporates T-slot for Lamp-bracket and round holder to insert flagstaff.

These two seperate #12 photos reveal the redundant draughting ports.

No Brackets at all on the#68.

Note: the Headlight wiring has its own conduit on the #57 and #58.

Finally whilst undergoing repair as the DB&W#32 (preC&S#76).    Note the Handrail bracket, fancy folded-flute bonnet on the lamp.

Same position as the #37 and the #51 above, Smokebox front, 3 rivets above Pilot Stay point.  Nice photo, got anymore?

Jim,
they sure take some time to put together that's for sure.  Fortunately the Nabble format allows an extended period of time to construct such essays and doesn't vapourise the contents into the Ether like some other forums.

Chris,

This site is so much superior to the Yahoo Gropes!

John,

And I believe that is a young Paul Newman (or given the date, could it be Butch Cassidy?) in the derby hat standing at No. 8's pilot in the first photo.

Please get in here and post them.  Do you reckon there were left and right castings and somewhere, someone got them switched around?

You're doing fine, Chris.

Not sure what you are talking about with castings. On models with certain lamps there are right and left castings. But many of the lamps shown here are usable on either side.

See now, everyone? None of these wonderful jokes would have any meaning if they were forced off into some new thread!!!

Grossly off topic and yet quite fitting...

Derrell,
check back to the pictures of the #12, those flag/lamp bracket castings on the smokebox, I'm guessing they're castings, don't look like stampings, which would for sure to be symmetrical have left and right versions.  The wonder here, did some-one apply them in a reversed manner in a shopping so the flagstaff insert round is leading?
Thats what I've been keeping my eye out for. {:))
