I think I started these models in late 2014. It was time to prime and paint the three cars this weekend. I am trying a different weathering technique on this batch. The cars were painted with a 50/50 batch of caboose red and boxcar red.
(We all really need to develop some paint recipes for Vallejo paints). Next came an application of some white on the bottom edge of the car, followed by a dust of black from above. The cars will be lettered next, with a dusting of red last to blend everything together. One car will get the circular trademarks, the second block lettering, and the last will have one circular trademark sans the lettering. Derrell will be pleased that the roof walks got a spray of grey, some dry brushed tan, and an application of thin black for a natural wood look.

Very nice work! Please send more photographs of the models.

Thank you, Robert. Here you are.
I started on the Eclipse Scheme for the third car, 8301. The opposite side of 8354 will receive a partial number patch and some fresh paint on replaced siding.

The third car with the Eclipse trademark is complete.
I was applying decal setting solution and half the black circle disinigrated. Aaack. Some quick knife work provided a scribe line to keep some black paint within the circle. You are not modelling if you are not flirting with disaster. Now back to the paint shop.

The boxcars got a light over spray of red to help blend in the lettering. I also masked a couple boards on 8354 in back to simulate some damaged siding that has been replaced. The opposite side will also receive a patched number. The cars are getting that nice high country tan/ UV sunburn.

Mal Ferrell in C&SNG lists #8293-8417
Question for those more knowledgable .... Were more built as S.G. Cars?

Why would they? There's a couple of photos in the chapter on wreas in the Pictorial that shows an attempt to mount SG cars on NG trucks.

Robert...
Ummm, if you mount a wide-body standard gauge car on 3ft gauge trucks you have that much more overhang and more likely to rock it off the tracks. Now a narrow gauge carbody on standard gauge trucks would be more stable but less efficient due to the reduced cubic capacity. There may be a need for more cars but not on the N.G. lines. Also there is an edit feature on this site, just click on More on the right-handside of your post and a drop menu will appear: whullah. There is also even a nifty little Permalink, clicking that allows you to put in a link into another thread.

The "Phase III" cars are listed as 8193-8292 in 11/1909 and 8293-8419 in 7/1910. Using a steel frame and Bettendorf Trucks (the "T" Section).
To be quite honest, I can find nothing in anything that Derrell Poole has written, Hol Wagner has written or on the C&S folio sheets that list the 8293-8417 as anything but 3' gauge cars. To the best of my knowledge they were built as 3' gauge cars and their overall width was 7'7" (according to Maxwell). According to the C&S folios the average size of their Standard Gauge Box cars was 9'6". That's not to say that there weren't Standard Gauge cars used on 3' gauge trucks or 3' gauge cars used on Standard Gauge trucks. But... built as... I'd say no unless Mal has more info than either Derrell or Hol. Chris, I don't want treats.... Rick |
Thanks Rick, Now here is an anomally, in C&S standard gauge territory not on dual-gauge track, what clearly looks like a Ph-III C&S Boxcar but with a # slightly higher than the N.G. cars. Was this a as-built-s.g. car of Ph-III proportions to fill a need for more cars given the higher number? Were there more? http://cdm16079.contentdm.oclc.org/cdm/fullbrowser/collection/p15330coll22/id/15803/rv/singleitem/rec/44

Progress on the boxcars. The patch number is complete. Now for some final weathering.
Oh, what is this--did the Agent drive over to the ore dock in his Dodge wagon to check the car numbers? Still working on getting the grilles some depth.

Hmm, time for new glasses for me! The above view sure looks different from the groundlevel shot I must say. That isn't a boxcar in the #8000 but actually #5421, just an older lesser-capacity sg car near a larger car. Sorry for wasting anyones time on this matter. http://digital.denverlibrary.org/cdm/fullbrowser/collection/p15330coll22/id/15798/rv/singleitem/rec/7
