Bettendorf Steel Underframe

Robert Richardson
Hi All,

I am in search of drawings of the Bettendorf Steel Underframe, including the trucks that were used by the C&Sng. I have the Narrow Gauge Pictorial Volume VIII and it does have a couple of drawings in the back, but the quality of the reproduction in the book and the size make it not very legible for my purposes. I did speak with Derrell Poole and although he does have some drawings, they are stored away and not easily accessible. I am hoping someone here has some drawings they would be willing to share.

Regards,

Robert

I have 1:48 scale drawings of the steel under frame (SUF) C&S narrow gauge automobile box car in the next issue of the NG&SL Gazette.

Here is the underframe for the refrigerator.
It is the same as in the NG Pictorial but I have cleaned it up.

the major spotting differences are in the striker plate area, as there are at least three (possibly four) different designs. I have also found differences in under frame between box/stock and refrigerator.

Thanks for the clean image! I haven't had a chance to reply to everyone, but this helps. Any information anyone is looking to share with me is useful. I plan to redraw in solidworks for some projects I have in mind. I did reach out to one of my contacts and should be getting a some copies of drawings they have in their collection. I hope to share these with others also.

Robert,

My 3d cad is in solid works, easily scalable. what scale are you looking to work with? mine are in 1:20.3, and I also have some white metal castings of most of the parts, including all three buffer block styles, the center sill is a challenge to get an accurate part made, but I have 3d printed a couple. would be happy to share.

I am part of a 15" gauge railroad museum and was looking at creating a 5" scale version of a car for our railroad. Was all considering a 7-1/2" gauge version also, just not sure I want to invest time into developing patterns for both.

I am still working on getting a copy of the drawings I need. Been a bit busy with work to follow up sooner with my contact. It is shame that not more of the SUF equipment survived and that some of the other railroads didn't go this route. I am interested in narrow toward the end of the era where more modern railroad technology was being used (e.g. piston valve, superheated, steel cab, outside frame locomotives, with steel frame cars and cast side frame trucks.

Or South Africa...or Darjeeling...or Patagonia.

Or the Carson & Colorado's iron pipe cars, which beat NZR, I think...

Figuring that the C&C had some of the boxcars I wonder why the DSP&P didn't use them too.

A good question. Maybe their cars were a test that failed? The C&C had both box and flatcars and they tended to shake themselves apart.
