A hotel for Kokomo

Jeff Young
My research has identified 2 hotels in Kokomo: Mountain House and Clifton House.  Here they are on the 1886 Sanborn map:

They both survived into the 20th C.  Mountain House was spruced up for company housing in Dec 1910:

and Clifton House was advertising for a cook on Christmas day 1920:

Here are two photos from the late 19th C:

Mountain House was gone by 1929, but Clifton House was still there (and appears to still be in business):

Kokomo was an upscale place with a dedicated roller skating establishment!

Interesting info, Jeff.  When can we expect an HOn3 version for your Kokomo?

Well, despite the fact that I know reasonably well what the Clifton House looked like, and that it survived into the period I model, I've decided to take some artistic license with this one.

I've always loved the Dallas Hotel (of Dallas Divide, not Dallas TX), and I feel I need Kokomo's equivalent of Al Swearengen standing on the balcony of the Gem.

Pics soon....

The cafe/bar at the front will be dimly lit, so I just did a facsimile of an interior:

This image shows the light baffling.  The downstairs cafe/bar is lit through the small circular holes covered with wax paper in the ceiling.  The oblong bit is the upstairs hallway, which is lit only by light shining out from under two hallway doors.  I don't know if you'll actually be able to see this through the windows in the exterior door or not, but it seemed worth trying.

And a side view:

I believe the Dallas Hotel was north of present-day Ridgway, CO, and not located at Dallas Divide.  The former site of Dallas now lies under the Ridgway Reservoir.  Dallas Divide's Rio Grande Southern RR station was known as Peake on the timetable.

Interesting; I didn't know that.

The Ridgeway Railway Museum has these two photos of Dallas:

Jeff,  Very Nice!

That's some really neat modelling right there, those boarded-up windows are a great touch.

Jeff ,

Beautiful work. An excellent model of a historic building that contributes to the era. The “weathering” is so appropriate to the building and its setting. You have captured all of the elements that the photos of the time present. Thank you for sharing your work. It’s most appreciated.
