yesterday at the west portal of the Alpine Tunnel

Matt Hutson
Hi guys,
Now that you can drive to the tunnel again, my wife and I made a trip up yesterday. Not much new up there, but it was nice to visit.

I was not a fan of the Forest Service's restorations when they were done, but now that they have 20+ years of weathering I'm good with them. Here's a view looking upgrade at the switch:

A view of the turntable site:

The enginehouse lead:

The Woodstock tank was red last time I was up that way:

The Pitkin depot in its new location:

We spent the night in the newly remodeled Pitkin Hotel - highly recommended. The restaurant is good as well.

Cheers,
Matt

A few more from Saturday.

The section house ruins:

The other enginehouse lead:

Top of the the tunnel portal. When I was a kid, you would wriggle in under the keystone. Alas, my dad wouldn't let me. Sigh:

Cheers,
Matt

Matt, thanks for sharing. Always good to have a few more photos of the stonework as color reference.

Thanks for these, Matt! So glad the road is open again.
Does anyone know if there is anyone maintaining the displays up there? The weathering makes it look authentic, but the more the weeds grow over the rails, it begins to look more and more left behind.
