Re: Trestle on a grade

Ron Rudnick
From  sometime back in a Google Search for special collections I have the following notes from CSU

Colorado & Southern Engineer's Office (1923)
The Colorado & Southern Railway list of Bridges, Trestles and Curves, South Park Division
Gives bridge number numbers, kind, length and height as of June 20, 1918

and a similar book for the Denver Gunnison,  DL&G Bridges and other structures
November 1, 1894

Has anyone seen these books?

Hi Ron,

I have parts of the D&RGW 1923 roster (which lists ice houses, telegraph offices, engine houses, scales, turntables, freight cars, MoW equipment, etc. — pretty much everything except bridges and trestles), but I’ve never seen one for the C&S.  Do you have a link?

Cheers,
Jeff.

Jeff

Sorry no link.  I do not remember what words I used for my search.
Googling "Special Collections / Colorado / Photographs" have drawn a blank

You might try looking up Worldcat-listings of various photos, maps, books, and documents and what library they are in.

To return to the original question, the bents would always be absolutely vertical, regardless of the grade.  From a structural engineering perspective, you want those bents to be in pure compression, no bending moments, else they may be inclined to buckle and fail.

Evidently the D&RG had also purchased the same design of truss as seen in these images in of the Black Canon of the Gunnison.
