Train collision in Alpine Tunnel

Kurt Maechner
I was reading through the chronology on the Alpine Tunnel Historic District page and next to 1906 it says, "Train collision in tunnel".  I have never heard of this.  Does anyone know more about this?

Also, in 1904 it says, "Train wreck west of tunnel."  I'm also not aware of this, nor do I recall photos of a wreck on the west side.  Does anyone know any details?

Would Historic Alpine Tunnel or DSP&P Memorial have anything?  Maybe Ron Rudnick might know.

Wagners "The Colorado Road" lists combine #25 as "destroyed by fire, Pitkin 9/11/04". This might not have been in Pitkin exactly but between Pitkin and the tunnel which would fit the wreck you list.

Combine 25 was rebuilt in 1905 (read new car built), then sold to Herr Rubicon in 1924. It was subsequently sold to the Uintah RR
and scrapped in the 1960's.

Page 138 of Colorado Rail Annual  describes a wreck between a westbound freight train that had just left the Tunnel and an eastbound mixed train that was stopped on the main line.It happened on Nov.25,1904.
