Then and Now: On the way to Alpine tunnel - Milepost 178-177

Kurt Maechner
I recently saw a photo of the C&S' trackage between Ohio City and Pitkin and wanted to see if I could match it with a Then and Now with footage I took of a drive along the route back in 2024. Besides photos around the towns of Parlin, Ohio City and Pitkin, I've not seen many photos of trains or track between these spots, so this was a fun find.

Here is the photo. I have no background on the time frame. It might even be during the era when the D&RG operated the line. It only had a heading "Near Roosevelt Park." It's interesting to note what appears to be a telegraph crossbar jutting out from the rock (if that's what it is) at left.

Here's the video where I was able to locate the spot. The video starts from a turnoff where you can hike to the remains of the Roosevelt Mine. From there I'm driving east toward Pitkin and the Alpine Tunnel on what is mainly the old right-of-way now CR-76. The video ends at the spot of the photo.

Enjoy, Kurt
