The Last C&S Baggage Car

Kurt Maechner
My family made a visit in May to the Stuhr Museum to see the last surviving C&Sng baggage car. Below is a video from our visit with baggage car No. 2. Here is an article detailing some of its history as well.
Enjoy,
Kurt

Always enjoy your channel. Good video- I just shared it over on the C&S Facebook group too. A couple of curious questions- wonder why they added back the end platforms? It also makes me wonder if the blanked out windows were visible from the inside before the restoration and just covered on the outside???

I'm glad you enjoyed it.
My guess on the platforms is that I assume the car was purchased to use on their tourist loop railroad and the platforms looked more "old-timey." Then again, I don't know what use a baggage car would have for a tourist railroad unless they planned to cut out (a lot of) windows for passengers. Again, this is all guessing. I only know a little about the Nebraska Midland's history.

I wondered the same thing about the windows. Photos of one of the other DSP&P baggage cars (No. 40 or 41) show it with two more windows (and short door) between the two side doors. Those didn't show up on the inside of No. 2 when I looked, though.

That's kind of what I figured on the platforms and it makes more sense if they wanted to use it in a tourist train (kind of like how the D&S uses baggage cars for concession cars)
I was just curious about the blanked out windows showing inside as this would be a neat interior detail.

Kurt, they may have been put on for Movie or TV use, for as you say, that old timey look. I seem to recall that there have been times when filming was done there.

Since the posting of the video of my visit to C&S baggage car No. 2 in Nebraska, a gentlemen from Germany reached out. He models the C&S and specifically made baggage car No. 2. You can see it running on his layout in the video below. Very cool that the C&S even has fans in Deutschland!

Very nice! Thanks for posting this. I know we have Chris W. in Australia, and Chris M. in Switzerland that are active. We have had two from England over the years, but I'm not sure either of them are currently active. Apologies to any others that have slipped my mind.
