The Down Town Mines of Leadville: 7th Street Depot to the Bohn Shaft.

Chris Walker
This post was updated on .
U.P.D.&G. headed Downtown, with a flat loaded with what appears to be logs; surely a load of Stulls for some stope, yet no mines are served directly at this time, maybe for Williams Lumber, thence to the mines?

David Digerness, The Mineral Belt Vol-I, pg325

EDIT: reminded by Keith :)
I'd missed inserting these images of the Black Hawk Livery, that got a Spur sometime between the Sanborn maps-1886 and 1889. That spur shows on the C&S 1918 but doesn't appear on the 1911/1913 rev. USGS Topo, nor the Sanborn 1937.

I haven't pushed looking for the Cupola decorated building "B" at this time.

The Sixth Street Shaft(cnr Alder St.): this was never served by rail.

Note the presence of two Headframes combined to the one building. The rear hoist was the exploratory shaft, with the production shaft now added to the front. This Shafthouse burned later.

Note the Williams spur has migrated East and another 420ft spur added back to 8th St.

Note by 1918 Williams Lumber Co Spur gone.

The Alice Shaft; not served by rail.

The Cloud City Shaft

with one-car loading elevated orecar track. Alice Headframe in the foreground. This Shaft pioneered the use of the new C&S Wasterock Side-dumps, before the Penrose signed on.

The Starr Shafthouse

Another not served directly by rail however(as will be detailed further) ore was hand-trammed over to the Penrose for loading directly into C&S(and others) cars. The Cloud City Shaft on the left; Alice Headframe is visible behind the Powerhouse.

Note by 1918 Cloud City Spur gone.

The Bohn Shafthouse.

to be continued....

What Mike says.

I alwasy thought the mine in the background of the Otto Perry images was the Penrose, not the Starr. I stand corrected, but am not changing the model.

Williams Lumber is a nice discovery. I have a lumber (and fuel) dealer in mind for that spot at the foot of Hemlock Street and across from Carleno's Grocery. Except my intent is to base the building on the one that once stood SW of the C&S Freight Depot.

I cannot wait for the next installment, Chris!

Thanks: I try.
You reminded me I forgot to add in the Black Hawk Livery images.  Building these posts doesn't get any easier.

New material for the next instalment got tripped over today: just one stray Mine photo, begat another, and another, tracing a direct line up the Hill from the Penrose, and provided names that help ID the picture I've had for a few years. Serendipity?

I don't blame you Keith, changing it would be difficult for sure. A complete removal would work way better.

As for part 2; that came out first, on the 22nd of last month; my, how time flies.
