Split Rock 1880s-2018

Kurt Maechner
We returned not too long ago from our family trip to Colorado.  I amassed great quantities of photos of videos of C&S sites and will share them as I have the chance to process them.  Here is the first one I had the chance to work on: a before and after of Split Rock near the palisades. Click here to see a video of the two faded back and forth.

That is the first time I have seen that photo.Might it be related to photos on p318 and 319 of the DSP&P Pictorial (Chapter 9 Along the line) credited to Robert M.Davis and Dr.Newton? If it was taken before 1883 could there be Woodstock buildings noticeable in the photograph background?

Hi Robert,
The picture is from Tom and Denise Klinger's Gunnison Divison Memories and Then Some on page 210.  I don't recall having seen it in other books either.

I would be delighted to give a summary of my trip.  I tried to keep thorough notes so I could write a detailed description eventually.  But for a short version.
1. Camped several days just outside of Pitkin.  Drove the grade in an ATV with a GoPro to capture the route up to the barrier.  Walked the rest of the grade up to the station complex to take lots of video and photos.  Unfortunately, due to the need to get our ATV rental back we didn't have time to reach the west portal (serious disappointment!).
2. Did some video and photo around Pitkin, part with a drone to try to mimic some of the Pitkin photos done from the coaling platform.
3. Camped several days west of St. Elmo.  Drove the grade from St. Elmo to Hancock and then walked to the East Portal (Filmed the entire walk on GoPro on my chest.  Got some drone footage at east portal and along the shelf grade immediately preceding the portal.
4. On the way back to camp got a lot of footage of two boxcars too.
5. Driving back towards Buena Vista, I tried to get as much footage as I could of the grade on the mountainside in Chalk canyon.
6. Later in the trip, got to Como and was able to tour the roundhouse-got a great tour by Jeff Badgers.
7. Drove Boreas Pass for the first time (also filmed it) and enjoyed especially the display at the summit.
8. Stopped in to see C&S 9 at Breckinridge.
9. Rode the Georgetown Loop and afterwards got a tour of the engine house from Jeff Badgers-what a wonderful guy!  He also let me walk through the C&S coach in the museum.
Oops!  Forgot to mention that earlier in the trip I got to see C&S 60 and coach 70 and get a little footage of the nearby grade.
10. Finally, drove through part of Clear Creek Canyon and spotted the grade in many spots, though, wasn't able to get any footage.

Whew!  That's the short version :)
