Re: Garage floor.

ComoDepot
I have been underneath.

About 200 yds of debris, suggestion was I needed a Mexican Backhoe to get it out, but volunteers welcome.

Get your shovel out. Will help keep you warm through the winter.
If the hotel collapsed into the basement and the rubble was left there and the Eating house built over the top, then there is stuff beneath the rubble. They would not have been empty rooms! Maybe the railroad which operated on the first floor kept their files down there. Maybe the Dr did his photo processing in a dark room down there.
Dig those rooms out man, I implore you, if I may be aloud to do that! LOL.

I have an idea then.
Tell your president that you have enough material to build a great great wall! And remind him that Mexico was going to pay for it!

Fascinating how people from all over the world would be drawn to the tiny town you now call home. It must be just so beautiful, apart from its history. Have long been attracted to the beauty of North America while Australia`s outback never appealed to me all that much. Often wonder if it is to do with past lives. My folks came out from Holland a few years before I was born, 56.

Would somebody explain to me please what the purpose of the Oil House facility was for? And just where it was located?
With a 2,172 Square foot platform, it seems large and I am surprised that I have not heard of its purpose before.

Re: Oil House

Oil was used for lighting and lubrication, seemed to be a big deal how much an Engineer was allocated and no doubt they had favourite suppliers.

You are misreading the platform entry, Oil House is not connected with the platform.

Re: Oil House

John Droste
Okay,
Does seem to read that the platform was part of the Oil House facility, being linked thereto. I do see that the oil house itself was not huge.

The large chimney behind the Hotel, could that have been oil fuelled? Hence the lack of need to have a feeder pipe not deep underground to avoid freezing conditions!

Re: Oil House

There was oil discovered in Colorado before this time, but I think it was mainly refined as Kerosene and for Lubrication, not sure I recollect any mention of it being used for heat. Even now I know of nobody who uses oil.

Begs the question of how they would have got it up here, Mason Bogie with a tanker car behind?

Re: Oil House

John Droste
It is a good question David. If it was by tanker then it would be fascinating to find a picture. Both of it and the facilities.
Maybe was just drums.
Would be surprised to find much oil in Colorado since oil is made under oceans from sinking organic matter. Plankton, I think. Saudi Arabia was under the ocean and was pushed out.
Coal comes from decaying forests and for some reason gas pockets form near each. All designed so mother nature can keep the earth at a temperature in that minute expanse of temperature between freezing and boiling.
Amazing really when one thinks about it.

I would also guess drums.

FWIW, Colorado does have large oil reserves.  It's just mostly in the form of shale oil, which is expensive to extract.  (The Rocky Mountains are relatively "new", in geologic terms.)

Re: Oil House

Hey Jeff,
I understand the Colorado is formed by massive upheaval in the tectonic plates. Somehow, the South Park must have been densely forested for a long time to produce the coal beds.
Before or after the upheaval, I am not experienced to guess. But if I had to guess, I would say before. Coal forms over millions of years.

Cheers.

None of the back or south side, all the models I have seen have been compressed do you have the space for a full sized one? Would be about 18 inches by 6 inches.

Good to know 18" x 6".  Goal is a Como module, Smelter, Black Hawk, Alpine Tunnel to begin with.  Out growing my 12x22 so plan to retire and go to a 30 x 30.

Let me noddle on it some, ideally want to keep Como to 3' x 12'.

Any info on wooden roundhouse stalls?  Have stone kit.

Thanks Cameron

So we are looking at the current Hotel which of course is still here and we have lots of info on, I have plans I can send you, PM me your email.

That time line is peak Como, and also fits the Depot as it is now, OK would have looked a lot shabbier, platform all the way in front of the Depot and Hotel, 4 tracks in front, Roundhouse at full operation, 2 stationary boilers.
