Re: Leadville Roundhouse Progress

Keith Hayes
I primed the doors to better evaluate the test prints. (That's what Mike does, and it sounds so professional!):

In general the detail is good enough,  especially considering that the doors are at the back of the scene,  about 24"-36" from most eyeballs. But it bugs me that the siding on the face of the door didn't render. This is visible in prototype photos, and seems an important texture to capture.  So I am thinking. I may try and intermediate file transfer from Sketch Up to Calida as described on Treavor's blog.

Also worth pondering, the Leadville boys were smart and tended to keep the doors closed. On the model, the rear track hits the backdrop about 3" inside the door, so that door will always be closed.  However the other doors will be open. Anyone remember the Revell engine house model--I think Jack Armstrong designed it--that had working doors actuated by a plastic panel between the rails that tripped a wire? I loved that model!

And...did anyone see that Tom Troughton passed? I appreciated his blog and kit reviews. We exchanged a few emails about projects and I picked up some great tips from Tom. I regret I didn't get to meet him in person.

I believe Al Armitage was involved in the design of the Revell engine house. Your doors look good. You could add texture to the doors with a very small fiberglass or brass brush.

The board lines could likely be scribed in with an x-acto knife or a Squadron airplane seam scribing tool.

You are correct,  it was Al: my poor memory.

It is a lot of fussy lines to scribe. Especially in the corners.

Back to work on the roundhouse.

O scale Grandt's roundhouse doors hinges are a perfect fit!

Keith,

The doors look great. Having scratch built the doors for my Como roundhouse I have a new and a greater appreciation for the skill and work you have in your roundhouse doors. They are a model within a model. To build one good model is one thing to repeat the process more than once is a genuine model building skill. Thanks and please keep the pictures coming.

Thank you, Lee, for the nice words.

Full disclosure: these are all 3d prints, so far less work than building them up from scratch. My sole regret is that the board siding did not print. But, the roundhouse is at the rear of the layout, and the doors will be painted red, and the detail might well be lost anyway.

Interesting as a friend of mine owns Diamond Turntable Co. and another friend helps with production.
I have a couple of Sn3 65' ones that I have acquired over the years. I also rebuilt an early Walther's HO 90'
into an Sn3 65' one too.

Here is a image of 1886 of what I think is the original Leadville turntable.
