Leadville Hay Barn

Keith Hayes
Even though Jim really wants me to build the Beer Depot, I am starting on the hay barn. This was a structure on the north end of the yard. There is a clear photo of 60--that the time the Leadville switcher--moving a cut of cars in front of it.

It is a board and batten barn with two roof vents. I elected to model lap siding to provide some contrast with the Freight Depot.

The building is mostly complete, and the boys are turning to construction of the roof vents.

A reference photo for the structure Keith is building:

It appears that a very large beam protruded from the top of the south end of the structure, likely used with block and tackle to lift hay into the loft of the building. The ladders on the shingled roof are a nice detail.

I have to set the hay barn aside for a few days as I wrap up scenicing a handful of ignored areas for my scenery AP.

This is the Smelter office just off Hemlock Street. It is a Wild West kit, likely one of the oldest buildings on site as it is log. Also, the sign is clearly hand painted.

With the advent of automobiles, garages proliferate along the South Park. Monster offered this nice kit for a small CMU garage, a typically odd little building. The tractor is a 3d print from Sierra West, very nice, but a delicate little beast. I don't know if this crowd has seen the "Leadville Fence." It went up after the last convention to hide what will be the lumber yard.

Some progress.

I got my scenery to a place where I think the AP jury will be satisfied,  so turned my attention back to the hay barn. One of the vent end walls was cut incorrectly. So I made a new one, sanded all the shapes to fit the roofs and completed those parts.

The building got a  bath in alcohol followed by a coat of black primer. I painted the eaves yellow (unpainted wood), gave the walls a light coat of sand and finished with a shade of brown.

As per usual,  I got distracted by other projects. An item on the to-do list is modelling the long coal sheds along the turntable leads. I figured these were built over time and have built two sheds, both in styrene.

I have been watching videos of the military guys doing pre-shading forever. I tried it-barely and decided to dive in all the way this time. I primed with Mr. Surfacer in black. This was followed by a camo stencil using white to vary the surface. Then I used old business cards to make the two stencils. I sprayed sand (tan), grey, brown and Rust on various boards. this was followed by a dusting in rust (Vallejo for boxcar red). Here is the result:

I am really happy with the finished product: it looks darn good for styrene!

I am waiting for my business partner to cut a stencil for me for the hay barn. But with the gun loaded and stencils in hand, I sprayed some grey and brown boards, followed by a light overspray of rust.

Again,  really pleased with the results. Give this a try and post some pics of your models!!

One of my business partners painted this sign on the side of his house to honor a former neighbor. (the story is too long to repeat here).

I thought it would be fun to memorialize this in miniature, and he cut me a stencil of artwork on his Cricket. Definitely the smallest thing he has ever done.

The hay barn became the canvas for the sign.  I sealed the paint with a layer of dull cote and followed that with some chipping medium. The tape and stencil lifted some of the paint from the chipping medium,  but not so bad I couldn't touch it up some and add drop shadows. It is all a start. We will let this dry and work it over some next week.

All the shingles are on, and some Pan Pastels applied. I am calling the hay barn done. At least till I set it in the ground.
A fun, easy and reasonably quick build.
