Re: Jefferson water tank Rick's Reply (2)

Jeff, I have a lot of respect for Joe, but I suggest you follow that nice clear photo Rick posted.  Check the files for the standard tank for reference and interpolate the bent height. My spidey sense says it is over 9' based on the photos with the ladders.

Yep, I agree Keith.  Dimmler has the post height at 7'2" which with sill and top plate gives a bent height of 9'2".

I'm not sure what to do with the trough.  My tank sits across from both the siding and the switch from the siding to the spur, so I can't get a box gutter out to the other side.  And the trough without the gutter doesn't make much sense....

Re: Jefferson water tank Rick's Reply (2)

Let's take a closer look at Rick's wonderful photo.

Focus on the second bent from the front (the one with the keg standing next to the frostbox).  Note the diagonal attached to the front of the bent, and in particular where it crosses the front of the frostbox.  Does the bottom look thinner?  In other words, was the frostbox assembled around the cross-brace, rather than the cross-brace being applied over the frostbox?

Then look at the light spot right behind the keg.  This appears to be an opposite diagonal on the far side of the bent.  Note also that the end of it appears to be poking out from the end of the bottom plate of the bent (right next to the tin washbasin).  If so, this cross-brace goes through the frostbox, giving more credence to the frostbox being built around the braces.

Good thread, guys, thanks! I sure am glad to hear about the frostbox built around the center four bents, because that's how I'm building my Waterton tank.

Thanks Jeff! I made a little more progress with trim and nbw's until I got distracted with building turnouts for South Platte!

SP was right.  I just can't ignore something as distinctive as the chute.  But a more surgical intervention for the box gutter that the chute dumps in to went well:

Still need to plant a bit of grass....

(No, no, not that kind, SP.)

Cheers,
Jeff.

That's some Contest Quality modelling right there.  Gold Award Dioramas!

I'd really like to see what Jeff could do outside of the compromised world of the Layout, i.e. a full sized rendition of Jefferson, everything just as it was, without compromise.

I’d at least get the water tank on the right side of the depot then. ;)

Thanks guys!

The barrel is easy, but any ideas on what I could use for the wash-basins?
