Grounded box at Forks Creek

drgwcs
I know a while back we got into a discussion on the C&S Facebook group on a grounded boxcar on the other side of the Forks Creek Section house. I could swear that there was a photo of that somewhere and I was searching here and the C&S FB group but I am apparently not holding my mouth right when I search. I did find one little discussion over there that happened after but not one with a photo.  I have a 3D box I am going to use but wondered on the door rather if it had its original or a man door. There was another possibly Tiffany Reefer that was at the Black Hawk Turntable as well from what I understand but I don't think I have seen a pic on that either.
Any thoughts?

I wonder if they're referring to this:

Dunno about the Tiffany at the turntable. But which turntable location (there were 3)? I'm guessing the final location is most likely, near the water tank.

Thanks Dave
That looks to be the location- I was thinking that there was a closer pic though. It was noted somewhere that it was a 24'. As for the Black Hawk Turntable body Harry Brunk had modeled it and I had found a note somewhere. I just did find a secondary discussion finally but not the main post that the possibly Tiffany may have been the one at Smith Hill- I just found a note that Rick Steele noted that there was some insulation so that was why it was suspected. The Smith Hill body is actually shown in at least one photo. (It is actually in the color thread- there is a similar one in B&W but I would have to check if identical)  If all else fails I can make my mods based on that one.

I do suspect that the turntable car was confused with one elsewhere, as you mention.

On the Forks Creek car, the 1893 UPD&G inventory doesn't include one. The 1917 valuation map shows an extension on the Section House, narrow and long. That could be what is being referred to.

Now, what 24' boxcar as there were several on the Colorado Central, from homebuilt, UP 1870s to UP 1880. I'd go for something really interesting, like one of the earliest cars, for interest and variety. Plus that'll force an image to show up! Also, look at the later images of Floyd Hill where a car was grounded, as an example for what your car may look like as a shed.  From DPL x-61284:

All that said, I believe the car seen in the 1940s color image is the one. The sign just in front of it on the ROW matches the location for two signs on the 1917 map.

Oooh more pics
That gives an idea for the back- (which will be what is visible unless if you stand on your tippie toes on the other side.) I have a 3D print that a friend was working on for a box and the test shot was short- it is more a 27 foot. I thought of this as a good use for it.

Leadville had the ex-Tiffany car on the ground near the turntable. Supposedly this was our last chance to know the true color of these cars as built. Rumor has it someone has a splinter off the car. I used some drawings in the Gazette to model my car in HOn3 as a forced-perspective scene. HOn3 is really tiny.

Jim, as you consider painting your car, please check out some of the threads here where I discuss pre-shading. If your car was one of the early cars with white trim, paint the car with white trim, then apply a light, diluted coat of red as a faded, later layer that you can see the white through. If the car received a UP patch, apply the black patch, then the faded, final coat. This might be especially true on the rear, water side. Likely that was never seen--at least up close--by the public, so it probably would not have received any paint. You might have some faded lettering too.

Use the model as an experiment to build your skills: tell a story!

Good ideas- I do have some of the old squared in box decals I would never use otherwise. I will fade over it-making it barely viewable. The car as printed starts with a gray- I will probably do a grey or india ink wash before I start with the paint That gives it the raw wood under look.

Jim, the two-window addition on both sides is the common modification. Work/MOW car to grounded shed. Cars just grounded. Or cars used as stations.

27' feels more South Park, U&N or KC than Colorado Central to me. White trim was on a few of the UP cars running on those lines. And that's a cue to push Keith's idea even further, lettered for another road on the shell that's faded badly then overpainted then bleeding through in places on the car.
