Glass Insulator Virtual Program

cdressel
Arizona Historic Preservation recently put together a series of video presentations about how to identify materials you might find on or in historic sites, and among the topics discussed….glass insulators! All about the colors, markings, shapes, and what era they are from. Quite interesting.

Check out the video here:

I won't kick Mr. Jones too hard for his presentation, but like
many railroad books, his details are very general and completely
miss the mark in places.  There are people who live and breathe
this subject and can dial stuff in pretty tight, if you know who to
ask.  I have my specialty areas, as do other historians on the subject.
I have offered it here before, but I'll toss it out again, .... if anyone
ever wants to know anything about insulators, I would be happy
to answer your questions, or steer you to a specialist that might
better answer your questions.

Sth Prk,

since you asked....

is it possible to have a dimensioned sketch or drawing of the wooden Insulator mounting pegs please?  Many years ago I saw a pair of those w/insulators, adorning a mirror at the N.N. rly office.  I'd like to make some full-sized here.

Chris ~  The sidepins you see in the photo vary in size, per their
intended use, ... power, telephone, etc.  Also vintage makes a
difference.  What is the "NN" rly office ?  Happy to help, but let's
dial in exactly what you are fitting on them.

Sth Prk,

fwiw, the NN Rly is the Nevada Northern, at Ely.

I have one of each, Hemingray -9 and -16.  I'd like to see them mounted up on a wall.

Well, post costs are a bitch to "Down Under", but they are often
found for sale here yet.  But I will get you some measurements.

That would be appreciated Sir!

I've tried analyse the angles and dimension but my mind don't process that data very well anymore.  I'd envisage a scrap of 6x2 being the donor.

You are aware that the threads are tapered, right ?

As you have heard, it is stupid cold here right now.  I will try
to bundle up long enough to go measure and sketch a sidepin
for you over the holiday.  Lately, if I am out in it, it involves
moving lots of snow, and then I am eager to get back inside
and get warm.
