Doings in Billings

In my Sn3 collection is one of those side dump cars Derrell mentions, which I believe was scratch-built by Jan Rons (?). I may be mistaken who built it (it was one of the artists), but I think it also took first place at one of the Symposiums. Here are some pictures:

On3 Side Dump Coal - 1990

This was the 1990 Rocky Mountain Regional NMRA Convention (Idaho Springs, CO) Best in Show Winner, the first model of these cars I know of. Past "glories" I guess. But is shows how the doors worked.

If you have the Aug. 1991 issue of MR there ts a full article on the model along with a drawing.

Nice model D. Both you and Big D have built these cars. Doug built one in 1/2 scale - outstanding model. Of Course, Bob Stears has built a master for such cars in 1/4 for the Cimarron works line. And Theo Berlyn imported a fair model from Korea (wood and brass) several years ago. I hope to getting around to doing a couple in Sn3. Eric Brocker offers a kit in HOn3 iirc thru Rio Grande Models. Harry Brunk built several HOn3 cars for the Union Central and Northern. Others should pipe up and show us pich-chers too.

The last I knew of, Derrell's car was in Boston, then sold to somebody in Canada?

The car I built in 1/2" scale is still sitting on a shelf at my house….

Brother D,

What, build a layout? That's a great idea!

On a related note, take a look at these Santa Fe Rwy. Std. Gauge cars. Look familiar?

Great minds think alike. Who wants to bet on which predated which? At the time the C&Sng side dumps were "built" the Sante Fe and C&S were best "bed buddies"...

Looks like you just have to swap out the lettering and you'll have your first piece of rolling stock for your 1:29 layout Doug.
That is a beautiful model by the way.

For the record, I have reached out to Leadville Designs to create a kit for this car. My own need is in Sn3 (of course!), but given the history of recent models, On3 and HOn3 kits may well be offered. No promises though.

I doubt a 1/2" scale model will be offered.

I was mistaken in my original post at the beginning of this thread. This car was scratch built by the late James Finnell. Contact me offline Keith and we'll talk. Thanks.

Hi all, Cimmaron Models produced a very nice resin cast kit of this car in On3 several years ago. This was a Bob Stears project. I don't know if his drawings have been published but they may have been. They also produced a phase 2 version, which was built from phase 2 gons. I'll take a picture of the early version I built tomorrow and try to get it posted. I remain in technological and quarters purgatory. Has anyone searched the archives?

I searched the archives. I found a reference where Bob Steers may have published drawings for the Cinder Cars in the Gazette, and found no pictures of the one I built. I made several references to it in a long thread on Coal Cars, but no picture. I'll try to address that tomorrow.

Mike I believe the phase 2 cinder car drawing, at least a side view, was published in the Gazette.  I believe I saw it recently and will look to see if I can identify the issue.  I believe it was in the past 5 years.

I have the On3 Berlin cinder car which I purchased about 4-5 years ago.  I also have one complete Cimarron Works cinder car kit and 2 bodies.  I guess that should do for a train of cinder cars…. And if Leadville Designs makes a kit, well.
