Coal Car details

While out hunting, being interested in all things C&S, I noticed hidden in the wonderful images these modifications done to the standard C&S Coal car.

These are probably the 4600 series coals rebuilt from existing coals in the Fall of 1929. They had drop-ends for hauling heavy machinery. There were 15 of them. Great Find!

Another, with # confirmation for Derrell.  This version seems to be done both ends as opposed to the Silica branch shot which appeared to be only one end.

All three photos appear to be Type I or St. Charles builds with the top boards knocked off. I think both ends would have been drops - not sure what you are seeing to think only one end comes out.

Chris, the enlarged photo of the suspicious X70 with the modified coal--those look like timbers we see photos of in Leadville presumably consigned for Climax.

Just saying.

Now I need to think about taking the top board off some coals for v-a-r-i-e-t-y.

Derrell, in the top photo at Silica, it appears to me to be a Ph1, and the far end seems to still have the corner plates, the top edge of the upper sideboard appears to be broken off just shy of the 2nd inner sidestake.  The other examples give more the impression, especially the later post of the 3-boarder of being double-ended definitely.
