C&S Common Standards, 1910: Water Tanks

Having just rediscovered copies of C&S Common Standard drawings that have been hiding in my files for 35 years, I thought that I would post them in groups for those that might be interested.

First up, the water tanks, both large (49,500 gal) and small (30,000 gal).










If any one has clear photos that would illustrate both styles of tanks, feel free to post them here.  I'll start:


                                                                      Kokomo tank (49,500 gal) and the last Leadville to Denver passenger train.


                                                                     Idaho Springs (30,000 gal).

The poor reproduction of the images is a function of both the size and quality of the original (a very early photocopy from the 1960s or 70s) and my scanner is not the best. The original drawings were to 3/16 to the foot.  John Maxwell (I believe that's where they came from) evidently reduced them with copying to fit an 8x11 page.

I will keep playing with scanner and see if I can come up with better images.  If so, I will repost them.

What scale do you work in?

In S scale the Crystal River D&RGW tank kit scales out almost perfectly.  The new PBL kit is a bit large when compared to the drawings.  Not sure about HO and O.

I have a better copy of the small tank but the scan is 300K and I don't know how large a drawing is allowed here.

Sounds like a good idea, Daryl.

I still need to get better quality scans.  The printed dimensional data on my originals is tiny but legible, espicially with my loops.  Unfortunately, when scanned into my computer, the dimensional data becomes illegible.

Any one got any suggestions?  I'm in the hosptal today, and will make enlargements of the originals on the copy machine here and then see if they scan better.  Does Kinkos do high resolution scans of originals this small?

Along these lines, I thought that I would scan all of my 1910-1912 C&S folio drawings (locomotive, passenger cars, cabooses, work equipment, etc), perhaps posting them in the Files section as well, to archive them here.

I have enlarged, rescanned with higher resolution, the water tank plans.  Please give me feedback as to whether the resolution is adequate for permanent archiving in the "Files" section.

I scanned these images at 600 dpi, the resulting file size is about 2.5 mbyte each.  Nabble seems to be limiting the resolution on this post.

Daryl, could you guide me as to a resolution/file size appropriate for the "Files" section so there is adequate resolution but a resulting image that is not gigantic?

For the 49,500 gallon tank:

Tank posts are 12"x12", caps on posts are 12"x14", sway braces are 3"x10", tank floor joists above caps are 4"x14" on 12" centers.
