Tomorrow, Monday January 20th, is 84 years to the very day, Monday January 20, 1936 that the Monday Eastbound freight left Leadville with three engines, #75, #73, and #537 in heavy snow.
About 20 hours later, at 3:30AM January 21, #75 and #73 derailed with a flanger on the Eastern slope of Boreas Pass while plowing ahead of the train. Charlie Williamson, engineer on #75, was killed, and #73 was left until August because it could not be recovered so far below the mainline.
An event worth remembering.
