AI Experimentation

Fred H.
This post was updated on .
I have been using various AI programs over the last year and have found the capabilities to be pretty remarkable although we are still at the very early stages. I am using Anthropic’s Claude for most of my work, but it has limited image manipulation capabilities. For that I am using Chat GPT although there are probably more dedicated programs for graphic manipulation… Suffice it to say, I think that many of the current software tools may be headed to the technological dustbin. Here’s a C&S effort that I spent an hour or so one this afternoon… I am modeling Black Hawk in about 1899 (roughly) and have always wanted to create a couple of pale yellow Coors reefers to serve the Coors warehouse on a spur near the passenger depot.

I know that this isn’t prototypical, but what can I say… It’s my railroad, right?

Here are the reference photos…

I cleaned up the poster using my pal GPT.

Take a look at this, Monty… Literally 30 seconds and a simple prompt…

Prompt: Show me this locomotive from a clean side view without any people or background. Make it look like a builders photo.

Problems? Yeah, third dome and no bell… (Among other things.)

It ain’t there yet, but this locomotive is leavin’ the station…

A better example, I think… From the No. 74 thread… Still lots of inaccuracies…

Remove all of the extraneous background from this image. Enhance the image but DO NOT ALTER anything else… preserve it exactly as is...

Now show me this in color… trucks in black… frame as weathered wood… ore car body as rusted red paint…

NOTE: Photos are exactly as produced from Chat GPT. No other photo retouching… (So, you can see the artifacts.)

There are bigger problems than the third dome - messed up crosshead, no main rod, and an extra, smaller, driver. The side view of 74 has four different-sized drivers. That might bind up a bit in the side rods when the wheels try to turn.

Fred, even with the inaccuracies the process is very interesting.  The Ore Car is very nice - good representation of the photo..

Keep playing with the AI.

Why would a new metal ore car start out rusted? The miserable random choices of these LLM’s just leave it all mediocre slop.
