A Battle for the Loop: Balloon vs. Wind

Kurt Maechner
This post was updated on .
I read of a very curious, even humorous, situation when the C&S attempted an aerial photo of the Loop in 1901 via hot air balloon.  I wrote a blog post about the event here.

Does anyone know if the C&S ever acquired an air balloon shot of the loop?  I've seen numerous high views of the loop, but I've always assumed they were taken from nearby mountains.

Also in the post, you'll see a great video of recent drone footage of the Loop (minus trains unfortunately).  It was filmed in the winter so it creates a unique view.

I found the drone photo above on National Geographic's Yourshot.  It was taken by Manish Mamtani.

Ivy Baldwin served in the Spanish-American War where he became the first American to get shot down.He was scouting Spanish positions when rifle fire hit his balloon and forced it down.In civilian life he was an expert high wire walker- crossing El Dorado Canyon twice-the second time as an old man.He also did parachute jumps from balloons and owned one of the first if not THE first airplanes in Colorado.I  think Buckwalter made several aerial shots of Denver. Collected Colorado Rail Annual claimed Buckwalter made some railroad movies- I wonder if he ever made any of the C&Sng .

Apparently this balloon thing wasn't a problem in getting the depot
from Denver to Como.
