2022 National Narrow Gauge Convention -- Who's Going??

This year's narrow gauge convention is going to be held in Tacoma, WA, from September 1st-4th, over the Labor Day weekend.

Due to my wife's ongoing medical issues, I cannot make the entire convention. I will likely drive down to Tacoma early on Friday, September 2nd, for the morning. I'm sure there are a few things in the vendor's room that I just have to buy . . .

I don't know who, from this Forum, is planning to attend. Would folks be interested in a C&S Discussion Forum early lunch on Friday the 2nd. It would give us a chance to get reacquainted, talk a bit about C&S stuff, before folks head out to the afternoon layout tours??

Thoughts?  A list of the folks attending would be nice, so that I can look for you, if lunch doesn't work out.

I really wish I could but much too far. (I'm clear in VA) If you do have a C&S meeting there I would love to have someone record it. I know Nabble doesn't have video capability but perhaps it could be posted on youtube or I would be happy to host the video over on the C&S Facebook group.

I'm sorry to report that I won't be able to attend the NNGC next week. My wife had a fall last night, ended up in the hospital with fractures of her pelvis in 3 different places, At this point I don't know when she will be out of the hospital. If discharged before the weekend of the convention, I will not be able to leave her. to attend.

I still hope that those of this Forum attending can get together for lunch or drinks--have a beer for me!

Well, Jim, first the bad news. I tested positive yesterday and I'm in isolation until Friday and then in masked semi-seclusion until a week from Wednesday. My wife has been exposed to me and if she gets sick I need to be around. So I had to pull out of the convention.

Sharing on the blog is interesting but would require some work. Both slideshows are basically a stack of photos and maps (20 total drawn by me), a visual journey that I walk through telling the story, raising ideas, talking to theories, finding threads, pointing out details in real time. In the case of the GSL&P deck there are some slides listing equipment and engines. Even so, stand-alone the decks don't tell the full story. I'd need to annotate images, make sure full references exist throughout, script each slide and make sure I add caveats so they're properly functional as stand-alone references--all do-able but will take some time.

Something I'll need to check on is image rights.

I am considering seeing if the folks running next year's NNG convention in Denver would be interested. First I have to make certain that I can schedule the trip!

Another thought just popped in my head: Online presentation of each slideshow to people on this forum. I have a ton of conflicts in the next couple of months that'll prevent anything happening until around year end. And I have no idea exactly how it would happen (I don't have a corporate Zoom account). But it would be an interesting way to see what people think--and even to unearth some more ideas and facts.

Hate to hear that just went through a round of it in our house the past two weeks- it was basically a moderate cold at this point but still had to isolate. (We are pretty sure this was our second round- went through it Christmas 2019 before anyone knew what was going on) Hope you all are doing OK with it without it being severe. Bummer on the timing (we had the same thing on timing too- we were supposed to be gone for our 30th anniversary.)

I believe you can save a recording of a Zoom session locally, without having a corporate account, but I'd need to try that to confirm it. You could then post it to the files section.

Pretty sure you can't do that with the personal version of MSFT Teams, with which I'm more familiar.

I was looking forward to the lunch Jim had suggested on Friday at the convention. If there's any interest, I could try to set up a video conference on Friday in lieu of that.

My thought with the corporate account would be to allow more than a handful to participate in the video call--the free variant is only small group access. I suspect Teams is similar, though my experience with Teams has been that I was forced to install it to get it to function properly, something I'm not happy about.

Your recording idea is a good alternate, but what I'd rather do is have the interaction with the group, get the comments, dodge the tomatoes that are thrown and capture it all live. Then if it gets the thumbs up, post it.

Hmmm, the Zoom site indicates free accounts can have up to 100 participants: https://zoom.us/pricing, but I suspect the time constraint would be the bigger problem.
In any event, here are a couple shots from the convention setup. Had I realized how slow the morning would be (nothing of substance before the layout tours this afternoon, and the evening exhibits and clinics), I would have flown up this morning.

Well, except for being forced to triple mask and get several "booster shots"
for undisclosed potential ailments, convention goers with names consisting
of an odd number of letters were asked to leave.  Those with even numbered
names were required to use a pogo stick while inside the convention building.
Otherwise, it was terrific !
