1978 C&S News (1) Mountains near Alpine Tunnel named for Poor & Helmers

Kurt Maechner
Still trucking through the archive of the Rocky Mountain Rail Report, the newsletter of the Rocky Mountain Railroad Club.  Here is a post with some miscellaneous South Park Line/C&Sng news from the 1978 editions including:

Demise of the C&S Denver shops
The newsletters mention the shop's demolition

Two mountains overlooking Alpine Tunnel named

Two authors that played a special role in bringing attention to and saving the structures at Alpine Tunnel were honored in '78 by having two mountains named after them.  Mt. Poor for M.C. "Mac" Poor, author of Denver, South Park & Pacific and Mt. Helmers for Dow Helmers, author of Historic Alpine Tunnel.

C&S standard gauge 641 commemorated with a movie
The C&S standard gauge engine that plied the Climax to Leadville line (the last narrow gauge stretch of the C&S until widened in 1943) was the subject of a movie and presentation for the Club

Enjoy!
Kurt
