1975 C&S News (2) - Alpine Tunnel water tank collapse, Bailey depot destroyed, GL turntable bridge complete

Kurt Maechner
I looked through the archive of the Rocky Mountain Rail Report, the newsletter of the Rocky Mountain Railroad Club, and put a post together with some more miscellaneous South Park Line/C&Sng news from the 1975 editions including:

Collapse of the Alpine Tunnel water tank

For as long as I have seen the water tank in the old engine house at the West Portal station complex (1990 to the present), it has been in shambles, but previous to 1975 it had been in better shape.  During the winter of 1974-1975, however, it seems to have collapsed.

Bailey Depot Destroyed
The town of Bailey was located on the South Park Line before Grant and Kenosha Pass.  The depot there survived after the 1937 abandonment, but met its fate in 1975.

The Turntable Bridge
As the Georgetown Loop restoration project progressed, they crossed the first bridge east of Silver Plume and then completed the turntable bridge, so named because the bridge was made from a former turntable.  It is believed to be the actual turntable used in this location at the end of the Loop's existence in 1939.  Some also believe it to be the turntable from the west portal of Alpine Tunnel.

Enjoy!
Kurt
