where's this?

Matt Hutson
Hi all,
This was posted in the Buena Vista newspaper this week. They've already told me where it is, but I wanted to see how this board does.

Counting the bands on the tank this appears to be a 50,000 gal tank, which pretty much excludes the Clear Creek lines.

There is a road parallel to the track with a parked car, with a copse of trees between the track and road.

I'm gonna guess Shawnee tank, just above the Shawnee depot. I've never seen a photo of this tank, and would really like it to be so!

I'd say Hortense. Later called Mt Princeton

Chris wins! I have not been to that particular part of the grade, but will have to check it out to see if anything remains.

Cheers,
Matt

Way to go Chris!

Funny thing, I was going to guess Mt Princeton based solely on the “not yet in the mountains” look of the landscape, and the fact that it was in the BV paper.  But when Chris came out with Hortense I figured I must be wrong (not knowing they were the same place).

Cheers,
Jeff.

Todd Hackett and some other members of the DSP&PHS compiled some tracings of the grade for a recent handout sheet.Would it be possible to mark the location of the tank(s) in question?

Robert McFarland asked if the location of the Mt. Princeton water tank could be marked on a map.  Since the Mt. Princeton siding and the tank are part of my Chalk Creek Branch model railroad,  I began to wonder exactly where the tank was located. On the 1918 valuation map the tank is located just to the west of the Mt. Princeton siding where the track runs straight west and starts a gentle curve to the southwest.  This location is further west than the present Mt. Princeton Hot Springs Resort.  By studying the location of the railroad track and Chalk Creek on the 1918 valuation map, and comparing it to the location of the railroad by the DSP&P Historical Society on Google Earth, I may have found an approximate location for the tank.  My guess is the tank was located not far west of the location of Hortense at mile post 142.09 on the Google Earth map.  The exact spot I suspect is west of the large pond on the south side of the track. The right of way is shown on the south side of the pond.  The spout is on the north side of the tank facing the chalk cliffs.  What do you think?

In the picture of the tank, it appears there is another man sitting on top of the tank with his legs hanging over the ladder.
