December 4th, 1913, was the day of the great blizzard that paralyzed the Denver area, including Clear Creek and Platte Canyon.
According to the Klingers'
C&S Platte Canyon Memories . . . , C&S 9 and 70 were double heading the first westbound passenger train out of Denver on December 8th and made it as far as Maddox.

Looks like the derailment occurred at the switch to the siding at Maddox.
Note the tool box above the firebox door of number 70.
