Wreck near Maddox December 1913

Todd Hackett
Another recent ebay find. Information on the back includes the date Dec 8 1913, and identifies the locos and says "no one hurt in this wreck on passenger train from Denver to Como" and "taken near Maddox above Pine Grove Colo C&S Ry."

This shot shows #9 and its tender with #70 in the background:

Tender of #9 and #70:

#9 again - how often do you see the top of the toolboxes on the prototype:

Great photos, Todd!

December 4th, 1913, was the day of the great blizzard that paralyzed the Denver area, including Clear Creek and Platte Canyon.

According to the Klingers' C&S Platte Canyon Memories . . . , C&S 9 and 70 were double heading the first westbound passenger train out of Denver on December 8th and made it as far as Maddox.

There is a companion photo in the book to complete your three images:

Looks like the derailment occurred at the switch to the siding at Maddox.

Note the tool box above the firebox door of number 70.

Lots of yummy details in these photos--more than I saw initially on my phone. The tender coal fences, the tool boxes and the underside of Number 9: look at those shiny tires!

The Blizzard of 1913 was epic. It buried Denver in feet of snow.
