Why wasn't Klondike Kate labeled for the C&S?

Kurt Maechner
I'm sure some are already aware of the answer, but I was curious as to why Klondike Kate in Como was lettered for the DSP&P and not the C&S.  A discussion on the narrow gauge forum answered it.  I wrote up a little piece on the explanation here.

Below is a photo I got when touring the roundhouse this summer.  I love the hospitality and openness of the people working there.  You'd never get to walk around places like this elsewhere!

Does anyone know why #4 was the number chosen?  Does it have some significance?

More like 4 was kept instead of chosen.  That was the number on the KMR and the WP&YR.

Just when I was hoping for some symbolic reason!  :)

I've always thought it would be fun to have a C&S 77.  Long ago in my RR modeling days I made one of my locos that number.

It's not like one can shop around to find the exact locomotive
one wants anymore.  And with NG, available selection is even
more limited.  A number like "77" is totally out of whack with
the C&S numbering system with a locomotive of this size and
wheel arrangement.

It is pretty much impossible to sync modern work and systems
with the old stuff that was set up and used over a century ago.

I am not too concerned with synchronizing the old names and
numbers as much as I want to see the new organization focusing
on the PACIFIC part of Denver, South Park, & Pacific.  Jerry,
when can we expect to see coal trains moving east over Ohio
and Alpine Passes ?

We have a work down in Denver next month, preparing ties removing plates and spikes and bundling them for transport. The more we can get done the better, can post details for those wanting to help.

#77 would have been one of the ex-Uintah 2-6-6-2's, on board tanks removed, with a brand new Baldwin K-36 style tender. Ridgway cinder catcher. I seriously thought about rebuilding one of these back in the 80's, but passed. I think Jim Powers may have built one. Somebody did.
