Water!

Jeff Young

Silicone caulk rapids.
Two base layers of Envirotex followed by a wash of blue and green acrylics and stippled iridescent medium tinted with a touch of brown for the whitewater.
Two more layers of Envirotex, and another layer of tinted iridescent medium.
An overspray of matt enamel to kill the shine where the Envirotex wicked into the banks.
A layer of glazing medium stippled on to provide the non-whitewater waves.

That is so good, a person might be fooled with the
right photography to try and figure out the location !

  Awesome work.

Jeff, a masterpiece!  A feast for the eyes... and in fact I'm pretty sure I can hear the water flowing too.

It's the best I've ever seen.

Jeff, the water is gorgeous, but better still is the vegetation along the banks. You've got a great knack for scenery, it's quite clear that when you look at the landscape, you SEE the landscape and strive to replicate it in scale. Very well done.

Just too good !!!

To me it appears Jeff has taken Paul Scoles advances in scenery and excelled ten fold.  This skill and technique of yours needs to be splashed all over a Gazette cover.

How about some more photos and of larger size please.

Inspiring work, Jeff!!

How about some more photos and of larger size please.

And how about a step by step discussion of how you did this?
For example, define stippled iridescent medium . . .

Jeff,

Beautiful water! Thanks for sharing both photos and water technique. Can you share some thoughts on the vegetation materials and techniques? You have an excellent eye for real world details and bringing them to the "model" world.

Thanks, folks!

Chris Lane had earlier asked me to do a scenery article for the HOn3 Annual, but I keep losing interest in the project.  And step-wise pictures (which are most helpful) are hard to fit into a publication.

It might make more sense to do a series of blog posts here so I can do it in bits and pieces....

Cheers,
Jeff.

Jeff

Your scenery is very three dimensional it appears you do a far amount of studying actual locations. I am impressed with the vegetation along the creek something a lot of people omit. Do you make a lot of your scenic items such as grasses and weeds.

Hi John,

Yes, much of it is scratch made.  About half the grass is Silfor grass clumps, and some of the weeds are Silfor Goldenrod, but there are also hand-made cattails, lupine, dog roses, scrub oak, willow bushes, and sagebrush.

The larger trees are mostly heavily-modified store-bought ones; the saplings are hand-made.

I did a post on willow bushes a while back (http://c-sng-discussion-forum.41377.n7.nabble.com/Modelling-willow-bushes-tp6255.html).  I'll try to follow up with some more of them (including one on the water itself for Jim).

Cheers,
Jeff.

Really lovely! The depth of the scene is critical to the effect. You've pulled off the "streak of rust in an immense landscape" masterfully. Including the bear.

Never a good idea to be unaware of bears in your vicinity.
