Dear Forum, my name is Melvin Salter, and I am brand new to the forum.
I had a great, great uncle who was killed July 31, 1905 near Blackhawk in a train wreck. His name was William H. Allen aka Billy Allen. The story of this train wreck can be found in numerous books and newspaper articles. Some as recent as last year in Golden today. Also killed in the wreck was section foreman David Furgason. (could have been John Furgason) one such story can be found in C & S Clear Creek district memories & then some on page 24.
I have been fascinated about this story because he was a relation. He also had 3 brothers that were railroad men. Silas Allen. Joesph Allen and Harry Allen. Harry was my great, great grandfather.
It would be interesting to find a picture of the wreck if there is one, and also to pinpoint the exact location where it happened. I have a rough idea of the location. At mile marker 3.5 west of Cottonwood and east of Smith Hill. There is a very sharp curve at his location. This is on the C & S line from Forks Creek to Blackhawk.
I also have a picture of him standing on UPD&G No. 9. Which you can find in Colorado Rail Annual No. 10 bottom of page 156.
The interesting thing about the picture I have is his daughter wrote on the back naming him and marked it him with 2 X’s. She also named 2 others. Pete Reed standing next to the cab and also names the fellow sitting in the cab but I cannot make out his name. I know the words are hard to make out but I'm sure it says Father of Leona Allen Mitchell.
