The Down Town Mines of Leadville: Overview.

Chris Walker
Denver Public Library X-6180

Otto Perry's sombre capture of Leadville in the Winter of '34: the dilapidated Starr Shafthouse looms large over the 7th St Depot.

In this essay I will examine the various Mines that sprung up in the Eastern half of Leadville. Most of these were served by the C&S, and are noted on the left half of the image below; those noted on the right were served by the D&RG's Orange Street spur, and may be detailed at the end of this missive.

Due to the width and difficulty to access the scroll bar for viewing that wonderful Panorama, I'll keep this post short.
Please note that in this rarely or briefly mentioned section of the C&S published in various Books, the actual Dates of construction were varied, as were the names of several Mines juxtaposed in print adding to the confusion.  Even the details published in the Newspapers of the time were misleading, as will be seen later. Some Mines changed names, were known by their former name, or disappeared completely; which made this research difficult at times.
Dates and Descriptions that are in conflict with other sources will carry an Asterisk: I welcome any corrections.
The D.S.P.&P. RR had built a tail track only as far as 4th St. to access the Williams Lumber Co. spur. Some sources state that was to the Cloud City Shaft, but that Shaft wasn't started 'til Dec-1900.
