I recently read about the C&S's consideration of running a train through Alpine Tunnel in 1911, several months after cessation of service. I put an article together about their attempt and
posted it here on my blog.
Below are shots of some rocks blocking the right-of-way back on a 2018 visit to the east portal. It was rocks like these that I'm sure kept section gangs working hard to keep the line open (and one aspect that stopped the C&S from pulling off one last run in 1911). Of course, the rockslide in 2016 near the large Palisades is another example.
Enjoy!
