Jim,
Decisions, decisions, I have most of the Leadville shops bits to do most of that, will wait until the loco turns up to decide how far I go. I have made up one of those headlights out of brass bits, not perfect but looks good but that's for a 2-8-0 which is waiting for me to finish the domes!Paul R. |

Jim,
Congratulations on your new # 21! In the background of your posted photo of C&S 21 is another partially visible engine with number 319 on the cab, and "Colo…" visible on the tender. Can you tell me what this one is? thanks, John John Greenly Lansing, NY

John, C&S 319 was a standard gauge 4-6-0 used in passenger service out of Denver. I can't find a photo of 319, but Otto Perry caught sister engine 320 taking sand at the Denver roundhouse the same year, 1918: http://digital.denverlibrary.org/cdm/singleitem/collection/p15330coll22/id/42857/rec/4 We forget that the C&S fielded a roster of very attractive standard gauge locomotives, too. And check out the details. Even though the 320 is a tall, handsome standard gauge ten-wheeler, all the little details are the same as on the C&S narrow gauge locomotives: The wood pilot attached to the steel pilot beam with poling pocket. The arc headlight on the high mounted bracket with the little holes in the side. The marker light mounting. The same pneumatic sanders as on the narrow gauge engines. The same offset handrail stanchions. The same lettering conventions. A true C&S "family" appearance narrow or standard gauge!

One new thing that I noticed, while posting photos of C&S 22 in the early years, is that the driver tires look to be painted a light color, white or light grey. Side rods, too. I doubt that they were polished nickel-silver.
Hmm, I wonder whether this was true for the other 2-6-0s of the period.

I like the size of Sn3.. I have to much invested into Hon3. I will not be tempted. I will not change scales... I will not change scales.. But some days I think it would be nice. Must stay focused.

Awww Don,
Just one wouldn't hurt! Perhaps for a bookshelf display. Maybe that painted and lettered C&S number 71? In truth, your's and Jeff's beautiful work in HOn3 has inspired me to collect a bit of a stash of HOn3 C&S stuff. It is really easy to rationalize, if you only try. I mean, what if I grow really old and end up in a small condo, with no room for Sn3??? I can still have my C&S trains and run them, too! And if I never get around to using them . . . well, that's what estate sales are for.

Cool! A #5 with intermediate tender and Como spark arrestor!
OK, that early version of C&S #5 has disappeared from RMT's website. Did you buy it, Jeff?

Tempted as I was, if I picked up a different era it would have to be Congdon-stacked….

Should I ever get fool enough to model again, it would be Congdon stack era.
Is 35lb. rail made for On3 or Sn3 ?

Hi Espee,
Code 55 for On3; code 40 for Sn3. (They both map out to about 40lb., but they're close enough to look the part.) Code 40 rail is very tricky to spike, though. It's too bendy vertically, and there’s no room for error on clearance. Cheers, Jeff. |

I use code 70 with respect for my eyes, even code 55 can be difficult. As far as era I do some in each except the
first, that would require a lot of scratchbuilding. Paul R.
