S. L. Smith Lumber Company

Keith Hayes
Does anyone have photos of the S.L. Smith Lumber Company in Leadville?

This business occupied the block on the west end of the C&S Freight Depot at the corner of East 9th and Hemlock. Smith bought the Freight Depot after it was no longer needed by the C&S and it was used to store lumber until about 1912.

I think this would make a nice model across from Carleno's. I recall the building on the corner in the photo above had a larger and more interesting cupola in later years. When the lumber company was still in business, I saw a photo inside, and have been unable to locate a picture since. Google has only documented the main drag in Leadville, so they are of no help, and the building has since been demolished.

Chris, anyone?

Are you wanting the interior of the store or the freight house?

here is the freight house in 2013

In the freight house was the old Smith truck, sorry I didn't shoot the whole truck

Keith,
there are numerous books on Leadville,; is the "Book Mine" still in business there?
look for Historic Leadville in Rare Photographs and Drawings  I didn't buy it.

Thanks, Chris. Glad to see the image operation functions on weekends!

The freight depot is built. I am looking to add the lumber yard, but a couple blocks to the south.

Keith,

did you notice the Freighthouse(in Sanborn) seems to have migrated, compared with the McClure image?

And the Monday morning mine run was delayed on account the Archivist(also the Motorman) was called into work early.

I am missing your point, Chris. The Freight Depot is on the north half of the block where it always has been.

Here's another interesting detail, taken the same day as Ken's photos. I'm pretty sure that's Ken's forehead and eyes at the very bottom.

Yes Keith: I should have been more specific and said: note the Sanborn drawing of the Lumber dealer cupola'd two story building in relation to the Freighthouse.

As seen in this G.L.Beam shot....

Just when did the C&S sell the Freighthouse to the Smith's? or did Sanborn not note the distinction in '37?
