Red roofed locomotives

Jeff Young
I've read the thread on #21, where Mal posted a picture that looked perhaps red but wasn't.

However, I have a PFM 2-8-0 (lettered as #64) with a red roof.  Now, there are other things wrong with it (such as Rhode Island domes and some chipping paint), so I plan to re-paint/re-letter to #61.  I assume that would include changing the roof to black.  But I'm checking here just to make sure....

Thanks,
Jeff.

Jeff,

I am unaware of anything but black roofs on C&S locomotives in the 1920s and 1930s.

If you are going to redo the PFM 2-8-0 as a Rhode Island engine, you might consider replacing the domes.  Precision (or old Kemtron) has Cooke sand and steam domes as HOn3 castings.  They are not exactly like the Rhode Island domes but are closer than either the stock PFM domes or C-16 still domes.

Good luck,

Jim

Hi Jim,

Thanks for the roof info.

The dome “issue” is the other way around: it’s lettered #64 but is already wearing Rhode Island domes.  I like the RI domes, though, so I plan to re-letter (to #61) rather than re-dome.

It still won’t be 100% correct, as it has a Pyle headlight (which didn’t appear until the mid-30’s and I model the mid-20’s), and it has the long air cooler lines under the running boards (a la the B-4-Ds), but I like both those features so I might just leave them.

Cheers,
Jeff.
