Photos of caboose 1005

Kurt Maechner
Does anyone know of any shots of C&S caboose 1005? I've only seen one when I search online. I'm a high school teacher and got a new room this year numbered 1005 (if only I had gotten 1006!) and I wanted to put up a caboose shot with the same number. Goofy, I know, but it's a way of sharing the joy of the C&S with students

Seems like the C&S crews had a hard time making that "5" clear :)

Did you guys catch this photo from the White Pass & Yukon site?
Is this a C&S caboose?

Sure looks like it. Long body, four corner cupola grab irons like 1009. Maybe #1000? It's not #1003, which had long grabirons on each side of the cupola.

It is- former Caboose 1003 After abandonment two cabooses 1003 and 1005 were requisitioned during WWII by the US Army Transportation Corps for use on the White Pass and Yukon. They were repainted Army green and lettered U.S.A. above the road number in block lettering.
Caboose 1003 became USA 90852, and 1005  USA 90851.
I wonder what became of this afterward??

If that is 1003, and it sure seems to be, they replaced the grabirons on the cupola. But it does have the correct windows. Thanks for the information on 1003 and 1005 in Alaska. I never knew that. For the correct style of the cupola grabirons on 1003 in C&S days, look at Tim Schreiner's model. They ran the length of the cupola on both sides. At least they did in later days on the C&S.

I was communicating with Robert Bell on this who is a White Pass modeler that I met a while back in Hickory. The US Army Transportation Corps had them rebuilt to some extent. (Chicago Car Company did the work)  1005 received roofwalks by the copula-and it appears so did 1003 from this pic so it would not be surprising they changed some of the grabirons.  Robert said that he had done custom laser roof walks for it and used a Grandt Line kit in HOn3. He was looking at ordering a 1003 from Western Rails.

The Narrow Gauge Pictorial lists 1003 and 1005 as scrapped in 1942. However we know that 1003 and 1005 were used on the scrapping trains. That might explain the lost chain of custody as they would have passed to the scrapper.

Mike, and others...

why are you dismissing the #1000?  What features did that have that are not present on the Bobber in the Alaska view?

I am going by the info that Rob Bell gave me- he is the only White Pass modeler that I know that has done these. I will double check with him. 1000 was listed as scrapped in 1939 before the end. The Pictorial shows as scrapped 1942 on 1003 and 1005 with a little note- may have been sold to the WP&Y at the bottom. They did have a rebuild and roofwalks were added by the cupola. The pictorial shows that 1002 also went to the White pass- that is in error according to what info Rob has. Seems like some forgotten history in all of this.

Thanks Jim,

I had wondered just how long it would be before the Footnotes of Derrells work were read and/or posted....the #1000 carries the footnote as well.

Quite frankly I blame the trifocals for not catching those notations the first time-
Rob Bell was sure it was 1003. He did have some in service photos which would be interesting to see.
