Mislabled C&S Rotary picture on DPL

Robert McFarland
DPL Photo Z-6048 shows C&S Rotary 99200 but the caption is obviously mislabeled.

The (totally wrong)1948 Date might also be a clue.

This is more likely to be Leadville, #99200 has the slope-backed Tender and after the Como Roundhouse Fire in March 1935 the Rotary was based in Leadville.

Theres a good picture of 99200 at Leadville by Mac Poor(Z-6049) and two Otto Perry photos at Denver:99201 in 1918(OP-7209) and99200 in 1933(OP-6390).

I've always have had a fondness for 99201. Probably from when I was a little boy seeing it parked across the road from the Museum. I someday plan on building a model of her since Mike Trent built the 99200. the trick is coming up with the blades 99201 had.

Hi Tim,

Some of the D&RGW plows used the single-piece blades (OY, for instance).

Not sure what scale you’re in, but PBL did a kit of OY in Sn3 at some point.

Cheers,
Jeff.

Well, I have never paid much attention to the C&S rotaries for no reason in particular. I trust that the tenders are from SG locomotives? I did not realize how much they are similar to D&RG(W) OM and OY, particularly the blades. Big surprise as all four machines were built under the Leslie Patent. Does anyone have the builders numbers for the C&S machines? How close are the numbers to the D&RG rotaries? I believe the paddle blades on 99200/ OM were more susceptible to damage, but were also easier to fix more quickly.

(Jeff, PBL imported a fine brass model of OY recently in Sn3. Someone else imported OM prior to that. In On3 there were the Durango Press kits, which I think was also duplicated in HOn3. You large scale guys, well, just wait a while and someone will probably help you out).

(Tim, while investment in an OM kit on the resale market might afford you a running start, I am apt to say you will send more to the scrap box than you will use. The blade housing and the blade seem to be most remarked as the hard parts of the build, and the blade would be an excellent project for 3d printing. Not that I am volunteering--I continue to struggle with an O version of the Leadville Standpipe and the S windows for the Leadville Depot).

I remember reading somewhere that the short/paddle/double blades could chop through the ice and hard-pack of a slide better than the longer blades — but that the longer blades were better (in some way) for fresh snow.  For this reason, whatever railroad I was reading about tended to use the short on NG and the long on SG.  (Can’t remember if it was the C&S or the D&RGW, though.)

Cheers,
Jeff.
